On a road journey from Delhi to Auroville, Miriya volunteered with is for a couple of weeks. She has taken an year off, dedicated to learn how to farm. Her dog, Star, is traveling with her and having him on the farm felt so good to Aashi! Aashi has been looking for Star ever since they left. Miriya wishes to buy her own piece of land soon and settle on it. When asked to describe her experience, here is a long one she has put -

A food forest, what do you imagine it to be. At Jeevantika in mid September you feel the incongruence of stepping into a forest amid the soyabean fields surrounding it.

One of the best practices you learn is to carry a stick to make your presence felt to the critters on this 1. 6 acres of lush land. Some parts of the farm are like the wild west, where Arpit and Sakshi also go rarely and I also decided to let the mystery remain.

I worked and learnt; pruning the support trees; turning the compost pile ; making a fresh compost pile from scratch and even scavenging on the road side for dry soyabean waste; preparing a vegetable bed ready for planting; planting radishes and carrots; harvesting corn, beans, sponge and ridge gourd; training the vines; whatever needed to be done , trying my hand at it. It was sweat, stains and lot of nurturing by both Arpit and Sakshi.

You see how they have nurtured their dreams and is ready to help with yours ; you see that there is hope for sustainable forms of agriculture which is more joyful and fulfilling than just yield per acre and on the side have Dal Bati and Patra courtesy Sakshi and Arpit.

They joke that they have a dog volunteer for the first time as my doggo is traveling with me. He comes morning and evening to the farm and now he understands when I say we have to go to the 'Khet'.

Jeevantika

We’re developing a sustainable food forest where we can live a simple, slow life in harmony with nature. A space open for everyone to enjoy, connect and learn.

We’ve started working on a 1.5 acre land near a small town, Badnagar, in Ujjain (MP) since mid-2018. Jeevantika is a place which is life-promoting. We practice natural farming (minimal intervention) and take inspiration from Permaculture design methodology.

This page is to share our journey with others and be able to find more like-minded souls out there.
