Welcome to My Mom’s Magic Pot!
Are you bored of regular plain dal? Try this delicious and healthy Pappu Palakoora (Spinach Dal) made with toor dal and fresh spinach. This simple Andhra-style recipe is packed with nutrition and flavor, perfect for everyday meals.
Soft cooked dal, fresh palak, and aromatic tempering make this dish comforting and wholesome. Let’s see how to prepare it step by step.

🥬 Ingredients:
• Toor dal (Kandipappu) – 1 cup
• Fresh spinach (Palak) – cleaned and chopped
• Tomatoes – 2 (cut into halves)
• Green chillies – chopped
• Salt – to taste
• Turmeric – a pinch
• Red chilli powder – ½ tsp
• Water – as needed

For Tempering:
• Oil – 1 tbsp
• Mustard seeds
• Cumin seeds
• Fenugreek seeds (few)
• Dry red chillies
• Curry leaves
• Asafoetida (hing) – a pinch

👩‍🍳 Step-by-Step Preparation:
1️⃣ Soaking the Dal (Important Step)
Wash the toor dal 1–2 times and soak it in water for at least 1 hour.
Soaking helps in:
• Better digestion
• Faster cooking
• Improved nutrient absorption

2️⃣ Pressure Cooking
After soaking, transfer dal to a pressure cooker.
Add sufficient water.
Place chopped spinach on top.
Now take tomatoes, cut them into halves, and place them upside down (cut side facing down). This helps the peel come off easily after cooking.
Close the lid and cook for 5–6 whistles.

3️⃣ Mashing
Once the pressure releases, remove tomato skins gently.
Mash the dal, spinach, and tomatoes well using a masher until soft and smooth.

4️⃣ Tempering (The Flavor Boost)
Heat oil in a pan.
Add mustard seeds and cumin seeds.
Add a few fenugreek seeds for aroma.
Add dry red chillies, curry leaves, and a pinch of hing.
Pour this tempering into the mashed dal mixture.

5️⃣ Final Seasoning
Add:
• Chopped green chillies
• Salt
• Turmeric
• Red chilli powder
If the dal is thick, add a little water to adjust consistency.
Boil once until bubbles appear and turn off the stove.

✨ Your delicious, aromatic Pappu Palakoora is ready!
Serve hot with rice and a spoon of ghee along with any fry curry.

Om Namah Shivaya 🙏
Wishing everyone a blessed and divine Maha Shivaratri.

On this sacred occasion, we are preparing a traditional Temple Style Pulihora (Tamarind Rice) – a classic naivedyam recipe offered to Lord Shiva. This authentic method with a special hing (asafoetida) technique gives that exact temple prasadam aroma and taste.

This simple yet flavorful recipe is perfect for offering after fasting and enjoying as prasadam with family.

🥣 Ingredients:
• Cooked rice (hot, freshly prepared)
• Tamarind pulp
• Salt (to taste)
• Asafoetida (hing) – key ingredient
• Mustard seeds
• Peanuts
• Chana dal
• Urad dal
• Cumin seeds
• Cashews
• Green chillies
• Dry red chillies
• Fresh curry leaves
• Oil

👩‍🍳 Step-by-Step Preparation:
1️⃣ Prepare Tamarind Paste (Secret Temple Method)
• Extract tamarind juice.
• Add salt and asafoetida (hing) to the tamarind extract.
• Boil this mixture until it thickens slightly.
👉 Adding salt and hing while boiling the tamarind gives the authentic temple-style flavor and aroma.

This step is the key to perfect pulihora taste.

2️⃣ Prepare the Tempering
• Heat oil in a pan.
• Add mustard seeds and let them splutter.
• Add peanuts, chana dal, urad dal, and cumin seeds. Fry until golden.
• Add cashews for richness.
• Add green chillies, dry red chillies, and curry leaves.
• Switch off the stove once everything turns aromatic and golden.

3️⃣ Mixing the Pulihora
• Take hot cooked rice in a wide bowl.
• Add the prepared tempering.
• Pour the thickened tamarind paste over the rice.
• Mix gently so the rice grains do not break.

The aroma of hing and tamarind makes this pulihora smell just like temple prasadam.

✨ Your Maha Shivaratri Special Pulihora is ready to be offered as Naivedyam and enjoyed as prasadam.
