Today I made the goofiest fabric project… a throw pillow from a pile of unmatched socks that I found abandoned in my son’s room! My mom cut off the toes and heels and ironed them onto lightweight interfacing then I went work cutting and piecing. They are a little thick so I joined them side by side with zigzag stitch on the machine then reinforced by hand with blind stitch. It turned out a little more retro-interesting than I expected!

It’s been too long - what better “return to Instagram” photo than this sunset through the lens of a giant bubble? I was lucky enough to be one of the small crowd of people watching a woman making huge soap bubbles at the golden hour. I’ve got a few fun ones from the evening and this is the best.

So fortunate to spend a bucket list day (one of many!) in Bologna with my son, hiking 5 miles from our apartment to gaze out over the terra cotta rooftops of the city from Parco Ghigi, a walk that involved walking almost 700’ up the steepest hill I have ever walked for that distance and mud-slipping down a smaller hill to complete a loop rather than backtrack. There were tiny field flowers and wisteria draped walls and ancient views and all the shared wonder.

We had such an action-packed week in Bologna there was no time to post photos, so here is the first of a few posts to show you this super cool city. First, another destination dinner - recommended by my favorite food vloggers . (Grazie Franci e Gianno!) first course was, improbably, cheese ice cream, and it really did have the texture and temperature of a nice gelato but with the flavor of three different cheeses, stracchino, robiola, e Gorgonzola. Moving on to a toasted wheat ravioli stuffed with turnip tops, artichoke served on corn and lime sauce, and the bacala with chickpea cream and mint and yuzu gel. Every dish prepared with love and am Edi le work of art. Una cena buonissima👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

Who knew that that very best most unctuous “risotto Milanese con osso buco would be found in Milan’s Mercato Centrale??? Grazie and team for a most delicious lunch and for graciously signing a copy of your book for me. The dried is in a vase at home right now. E grazie per un soggiorno ottimo - I recommend Duo Milano Porta Nuova to any Milan-bound travelers this year.

Bucket list dinner night 2 of 2 in Milan: the pizza tasting menu we learned about from that was every bit as creative, boundary-stretching, and absolutely delicious as promised. From the crunchy exterior of the osso buco-filled bite on potato foam to the super-umami blast of the thick but oh so light crust and the innovative calzone, it was an unforgettable meal.
The night started off with apertivo at the Navigli, a charming, vibrant, picturesque area built around centuries-old canals designed by Da Vinci and stuffed with shops and restaurants after a walk through Piazza G*e Aulenti to admire the super-modern skyline. A second perfect night in this super cool city.

Siamo arrivati a Milano, io e mio figlio!
Where we navigated the Metro to the Duomo and drank Negroni sbagliati and ate osso buco con risotto Milanese at Campari’s flagship restaurant in Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II and wandered to see La Scala where we stumbled across a statue of Alejandro Manzoni, beloved author of I Promessi, then meandered in the drizzle on a street of cobblestone back toward the Duomo listening to a busker performing The Sound of Silence. Che bella serata. A perfect first night in this vibrant city.

A round up of images from our too-short time in Edinburgh: we may have wandered down Diagon Alley, sampled mead at Grassmarket Market, enjoyed people - watching at AnineCon, soaked up Scottish art at the National Gallery, ate the most delicious pho, wandered up and down Advocates Close and loved ending up in front of Edinburgh Castle by the light of the full moon. Magic really IS in the moment.

Beautiful Saturday morning at Edinburgh’s Royal Botanic Gardens- I especially loved the pop of color from the spring blooms, the Chinese garden section, the waterfalls, seeing so many people out sitting on the grass enjoying the day, but most of all spending the time with my mom, sister, and one of my sons who was able to join us.

Edinburgh, where we spoiled mom silly on the occasion of her 82nd birthday with The Grand Suite at the ! Yes, there’s only one, it’s almost as big as my house, and it comes with a view of the Castle and access to the relaxing One Spa with a rooftop hydrotherapy pool and thermal suite. You can bet we had room service that first night!

Last day of Highland magic: dolphins, seaglass hunting at low tide at Chanonry Point; a mile-long walk along Rosemarkie Beach for sun-dried tomato hummus and interesting conversation at Crofter, Highland cows, and exploring the ruins of Urquhart Castle. Best quality time with my mom and sister!
