Corochinato, the most Genoese aperitif there is The Genoese call it Asinello, but its real name is Corochinato. It is an aromatized white wine made from "Coro," the traditional white wine of Coronata, and "chinato," an infusion of 18 herbs, including two types of wormwood, gentian, thyme, cinnamon, oregano, holy thistle, and cinchona. The nickname Asinello comes from the depiction of a donkey on the bottle label, which has remained original since 1886. Looking at the bottle, you'll be lost in the label: it truly depicts a world, something from the past that has come down to us. Against the characteristic green backdrop, you can see the Coronata hill and its village (the sanctuary of Santa Maria and San Michele Arcangelo is clearly visible), from which a donkey loaded with baskets full of bottles and its driver, Pacciûgo, the legendary sailor from Coronata, protagonist of one of Genoa's most famous legends: Pacciûgo and Pacciûga, have just descended. The bottle also reads "Aperitivo di gran lusso" (Aperitif of great luxury). This is because you have to think of Genoa in 1886: Cornigliano was then a very famous holiday resort, with beautiful villas, wealthy people, and many foreigners. They were the first consumers of Asinello. Nowadays, times have changed, production, of course, the bottles are no longer brought to Genoa 🏴 on donkey back. But the tradition has remained intact.
