Since we have a biodynamic farm and taking into consideration the fact that having different types of animals is fundamental for biodynamic philosophy, around 2011 we decided to start working some of our vineyards with heavy horses.
The search for the right breed with the optimal balance between size, character and versatility was extremely difficult. In the end we ended up with Comtois from France, the perfect breed for what we wanted to do.
For many years we worked the vineyards and kitchen garden with them. We also rode them, at times.
Today we have scaled back the project, because with our clay based soil and far apart vineyard rows, it’s very difficult to do work with horses.
In any case, it was one of the most interesting projects that we created in the past 20 years on the farm and I really would like to implement it again in the future.
