It was a long time ago, but when I met an international student from China who couldn't speak Japanese, I thought we would be able to communicate in Chinese characters, so I tried it.
I wrote a sentence in kanji that I thought would be readable for her, but she didn’t understand it at all.
Chinese people don't understand Japanese kanji! The experience shocked me.
This occurrence made me realize that Japanese kanji is more different from Chinese kanji than I’d imagined.
Over a long period of time, Kanji, originally from China, has come to be used in a distinctive way in Japan.
A total of 1006 kanji must be learned in the 6 years of elementary school.
In my school days, our homework was to write 100 or 200 characters in the kanji book every day.
Maybe today's students also write kanji for their summer vacation homework.
The empty, white kanji book page, which slowly fills every day, is one of the memories of my summer vacation.
