Washing Japanese sweet potatoes 🍠
One charm of Japanese sweet potatoes is their signature purple skin, and at AoiFarm, we take great care to keep the skin in its best condition.
It may look like we’re washing them quite roughly, but don’t worry, it’s all technique.
The key is enough pressure to remove soil, but not so much that it damages the skin.
We check each lot carefully and adjust the water pressure and speed whenever needed.
strong enough to clean off the dirt, but gentle enough to protect the skin.

🌱 Are Japanese sweet potato sprouts safe to eat?
Yes! Unlike regular potatoes, sweet potato sprouts are completely safe. 🙌
BUT—they do steal nutrients from the sweet potato, so it's best to remove them once you spot them.

💡 Tip: Sweet potatoes start sprouting above 20℃. Store them in a cool, dry place to keep them fresh longer!

🗾 KUMAMOTO PREFECTURE

While Kumamoto may not be as widely recognized by international tourists as destinations like Tokyo, Kyoto, or Osaka, Japan lovers are sure to recognize its adorable mascot, Kumamon 🐻.
A lesser-known fact about Kumamoto is that it’s an agricultural hub of Kyushu, thanks to its central location and fertile soil, making it perfect for growing a wide variety of vegetables.
Japanese sweet potatoes are no exception—those grown in Kumamoto are especially beautiful and flavorful.

If you visit Kumamoto, be sure to try "ikinari dango"—a signature local treat traditionally made with a wheat dough wrap, sliced Japanese sweet potato, and red bean paste filling.

[Introducing AoiFarm - 🌱 Production Area 🍠]

Hokkaido is famous for its powder snow, cool climate and delicious dairy products. It is also an agriculture powerhouse of Japan thanks to massive land area and cool climate.
Japanese sweet potatoes are not traditionally grown in Hokkaido because sweet potatoes prefer warmth, but we took on the challenge. Our effort paid off as satsumaimo grown in Hokkaido turned out to be much sweeter and creamier thanks to the drastic temperature change between day and night.

Hokkaido is ideal for visiting any time of the year because you can enjoy lavender fields and fresh produce in the summer, and world-class skiing and hot springs in the winter. Try to plan ahead, as hotels and transportation can get quite crowded during the Sapporo Snow Festival in February.

🗾 Kagoshima Prefecture

Kagoshima is located at the southern tip of Japan's Kyushu Island, right next to Miyazaki Prefecture. Known for its stunning coastlines, rejuvenating onsens (hot springs), and the active Sakurajima volcano 🌋, Kagoshima is a top destination for nature lovers seeking relaxation. It's also Japan's largest producer of Japanese sweet potatoes.
In fact, the name "satsumaimo" comes from the Satsuma region (part of Kagoshima), the first place to cultivate Japanese sweet potatoes after Portuguese and Spanish traders introduced them to Japan in the 16th century.

If you visit a Kagoshima hot spring, be sure to try their steamed food selection, often including egg, corn, chawamushi, and of course, the deliciously fluffy Japanese sweet potatoes.

🗾OKINAWA

Often called the Hawaii of Japan, Okinawa is a popular destination for both Japanese and international travelers, known for its beautiful beaches, rich culture, and, of course, its status as one of the world’s Blue Zones—places where people live the longest, healthiest lives.

Their secret? The humble beni imo, Okinawa’s vibrant purple sweet potato.

Packed with antioxidants, vitamins, and complex carbs, this superfood is a nutritious alternative to rice and adds a colorful twist to any meal. At Okinawa AoiFarm, we are not only growing Okinawa’s most popular beni imo variety, Chura Koi Beni, but also other purple sweet potato varieties.
If you’re planning a trip to Japan, be sure to visit Okinawa and try the famous beni imo tarts!

🗾IBARAKI PREFECTURE

Ibaraki, located in the northern part of Japan, is renowned for its agricultural abundance, including fresh fruits and vegetables like melons and strawberries. It is also Japan’s second-largest production area for Japanese sweet potatoes. While the northern climate is colder and offers less time for sweet potato cultivation, Ibaraki's fertile loamy soil is perfect for growing beautiful Japanese sweet potatoes.

These delicious tubers hold significant cultural, agricultural, and economic importance in the prefecture. If you visit Ibaraki, be sure to explore the numerous Japanese sweet potato specialty stores to sample a variety of satsumaimo delights!

🍠✨ How to Store Japnese Sweet Potatoes for Maximum Freshness! ✨🍠
Want to keep your Japanese sweet potatoes delicious and vibrant? Here are some key tips for proper storage!
1. Avoid refrigerator🥶: If stored below 10℃, sweet potatoes can spoil. Instead, store sweet potatoes in a cool, dry place between 12 to 18℃.
2. Watch the Heat 🌡️: On the flip side, temperatures above 20℃ can cause them to sprout roots. While these roots are edible, you’ll want to remove them if you see them. These roots will take all the nutrients from your Japanese sweet potatoes if left to grow.
3. Keep the dirt! If you bought them with dirt, don’t wash them until you’re ready to cook!
Tip: you can wrap each Japanese sweet potato in newspaper to protect them from temperature change and moisture.

Keep your sweet potatoes happy and enjoy them in all your favorite dishes! 🍽️❤️
