Enterotoxemia in sheep,

Also called "pulpit kidney disease" or "basil", it is a deadly nutritional disease caused by the toxin of the bacteria *Clostridium perfringens (Type D), present in the intestine, which is activated by grain-rich diets or abrupt changes, causing sudden death in strong and gluttonous animals.

It is prevented with vaccination (CD-T) and proper dietary management, avoiding overfeeding and ensuring gradual transition to concentrated foods.

Symptoms

Sudden death, often without prior symptoms.
Lambs: Seizures, tremors, spasms, stiffness, drooling, teeth grinding.

Treatment

It is difficult and ineffective once the symptoms appear, due to the rapidity of the disease.

Antibiotics like penicillin or tetracyclines can be used, but prevention is key.
Adulting: stiffness, colic, fast breathing.

In necropsy, hemorrhagic enteritis (dark red intestine) and necrosis are observed.

Maintaining a proper nutrition plan is one of the biggest challenges in sheep farming. Formulating your own feeds can help ensure balanced nutrition for your Dorper sheep

1. Understand Nutritional Requirements
Dorper sheep need a balanced diet that includes:
Energy sources (e.g., maize, wheat bran, molasses)
Protein sources (e.g., soybean meal, cottonseed cake, sunflower meal)
Fiber sources (e.g., hay, silage, maize stover)
Minerals & vitamins (e.g. kondoo block from Vital Animal Health and Xtra Mali from CKL Africa Ltd )
Water (Always provide clean and fresh water)

2. Use Locally Available Ingredients
To reduce feed costs, source raw materials like maize bran, wheat pollard, and legume fodders locally while ensuring quality.

3. Maintain the Right Feed Ratio
A good Total Mixed Ration (TMR) should include:
40-50% roughages (silage, hay, Napier grass)
30-40% concentrates (energy & protein sources)
5-10% minerals & vitamins
