You bought a beautiful black Friesian.
The coat was deep black. Glossy. Healthy. The kind of cow that turns heads when it walks into the milking parlour.
A few months later, something changes.
The neck starts looking rusty. The back loses its shine. Around the ears and shoulders, the black fades into brown.
Someone tells you it is because of the sun.
Another says that all black cows eventually become brown.
Neither explanation is completely true.
Most of the time, a Friesian does not lose its colour because of age or sunshine. It loses its colour because something inside the body is no longer working as it should.
The coat is often the first place where nutritional problems become visible.
Ignore it, and the next signs may be lower milk production, poor fertility, weak calves or repeated disease.
The brown coat is not the problem.
It is the warning.
One. Copper deficiency is the number one cause.
If you ask most dairy nutritionists what causes black Friesians to turn brown, copper deficiency will usually be the first answer.
Copper is an essential trace mineral.
Among its many jobs is helping the body produce melanin, the pigment responsible for the rich black colour of the hair coat.
When copper becomes deficient, the body cannot produce enough pigment.
The black coat gradually changes into a rusty brown or reddish colour.
The change is usually most noticeable around the eyes, neck, shoulders and along the back.
Unfortunately, the coat is only one of the symptoms.
Copper deficiency may also cause:
Reduced milk production.

But healthy Friesians receiving balanced nutrition rarely develop the severe rusty appearance farmers complain about.
Think about it.
Two cows graze in the same field.
One stays jet black.
The other becomes reddish brown.
The sun reached both equally.
Nutrition did not.
So how do you correct the problem?
Start by improving the feeding programme.
Good genetics demand good nutrition.
Provide quality forage throughout the year.
Use well-made silage.
Harvest Napier at the correct stage instead of allowing it to become too mature.
Balance concentrates according to milk production.
Most importantly, never skip mineral supplementation.
Which supplements should dairy farmers use?
A good dairy mineral should contain an appropriate balance of:
