RABBIT FARMING IN URBAN AREAS

‎HOUSING STRUCTURE (HUTCHES OR CAGES)
‎Use raised cages (at least 60–90 cm above ground) made of yimber + wire mesh OR
Metal cages (more durable and hygienic)
‎Floor should have wire mesh (allows droppings to fall through). Raised cages reduce disease and make cleaning easier.

‎CAGE SIZE REQUIREMENTS
‎Doe (female with young): 60 × 90 × 45 cm
‎Buck (male): 60 × 60 × 45 cm
‎Growers (young rabbits): group housing possible.
Avoid overcrowding, it leads to stress and disease.

‎VENTILATION & TEMPERATURE CONTROL
‎Ensure good airflow (open sides or wire mesh walls). Ideal temperature: 15–25°C
Provide shade (iron sheets with insulation or shade net). Rabbits are sensitive to heat, heat stress can kill them quickly.

‎HYGIENE & WASTE MANAGEMENT
‎Install dropping trays or slanted floors. Clean cages at least 2–3 times per week. Collect manure for sale and kitchen gardening..Rabbit urine is also valuable as organic fertilizer.

‎FEEDING & WATER SYSTEMS
‎Use feeders to reduce wastage. Water bottles or ni**le drinkers. Keep feed off the floor. Clean water must be available 24/7.

‎SECURITY & PROTECTION
‎Protect rabbits from Dogs, cats, rats. Theft is also important in urban areas. Use strong wire mesh and lockable structures. Cover cages at night if predators are common.

‎BREEDING & NESTING SPACE
‎Provide a nesting box for pregnant does. Use dry materials (hay, wood shavings). Keep nesting area warm and clean

‎URBAN-FRIENDLY DESIGN TIPS
‎Use stacked (tiered) cages to save space. Control smell with regular cleaning. Ensure quiet environment (avoid noise stress). Follow local regulations if in residential areas. To save on cost, use locally available timber and offcuts, and recycle materials where safe. Start small (2–5 rabbits) and expand. Sell meat, breeding stock and manure

‎COMMON MISTAKES TO AVOID
‎Keeping rabbits on the ground
Poor ventilation (causes disease)
‎Overcrowding cages
‎Irregular cleaning (leads to bad smell & infections)

‎SIMPLE STARTER SETUP (URBAN KENYA)
‎Begin with 3 to 5 cages that are stacked together.
‎Start with 1 buck, and 2–3 does
‎Use small shaded shed or balcony space
‎Basic feeders & drinkers

Oyster Mushroom requires substrate with a C:N ratio of 30:1. Since wheat straw has a very high C:N rate, it is supplemented with wheat bran to achieve the required (30:1) C:N ratio.

If you have not registered for our training on Friday, 26 June 2026., please contact u.

CONTAINER FARMING TIPS: ARROWROOTS
Arrowroot (commonly called nduma in Kenya) can actually do very well in containers if you manage moisture, space, and nutrients properly. Here’s a practical, step-by-step guide to help you succeed:

1). Choosing the Right Container
Use large, deep containers (at least 40–60 cm deep). Use containers like buckets, drums, sacks (gunia), or grow bags. Ensure good drainage holes (very important to prevent rotting).

2). Soil Preparation
Arrowroots love rich, loose, and moist soil:
Mix 2 parts loamy soil, 1 part well-rotted manure (cow or compost) and 1 part sand (for drainage). Soil should hold moisture but not become waterlogged.

3). Watering (MOST Important)
Arrowroots need constant moisture. Water daily in hot weather and every 2–3 days in cooler weather. Do NOT let soil dry out completely. But avoid standing water → causes rot. Place containers where they can retain moisture (partial shade is ideal)

4) Light Requirements
Best in partial shade or filtered sunlight. Too much direct sun → dries soil quickly. Too little light leads to poor tuber formation

5). Planting
Use healthy corms/rhizomes. Plant in
5–10 cm depth. One plant per container (for best yield). Water immediately after planting

6). Feeding / Fertilizer
Arrowroots are heavy feeders. Feed arrowroots in every 3–4 weeks. Add compost or manure (top dressing). You can also use liquid organic fertilizer (e.g., compost tea).

7). Pest & Disease Control
Common issues include Aphids, caterpillars, leaf spots. Control using neem spray or soapy water. Remove affected leaves early

8). Maturity & Harvest
Arrowroots matures in 6–8 months. Signs to look for include leaves turn yellow and start drying. When harvesting, gently remove soil and harvest tubers.

9). Extra Tips for High Yield
Use mulch (dry grass) to retain moisture. Avoid overcrowding. Rotate soil or refresh after harvest. Keep containers near a water source for easy watering

CABBAGE FARMING TIPS‎Cabbage farming can be very profitable if you get the basics right especially timing, soil care, and pest control. Here are practical, field-tested tips to help you succeed.

‎1. CHOOSE THE RIGHT VARIETY
‎Select varieties suited to your area and market demand..In Kenya, common types include Gloria F1 known for its large heads, good market value, Copenhagen Market known for its early maturing and Pruktor F1 known for its high yield, disease tolerant. Hybrid varieties may cost more but give better yields and uniform heads.

‎2. SOIL PREPARATION
‎Use well-drained and fertile loam soil with pH of 6.0–6.8. Before planting, add well-decomposed manure and plough deeply and make fine seedbed.

‎3. NURSERY MANAGEMENT
‎Raise seedlings in a nursery bed or seed trays. Protect seedling from heavy rain and pests. Water regularly but avoid waterlogging. Seedlings are ready in 3–4 weeks (4–6 true leaves)

‎4. TRANSPLANTING
‎Transplant in the evening or cloudy day and plant using spacing of 60 cm × 60 cm (large varieties) or 45 cm × 45 cm (small varieties). Water immediately after transplanting

‎5. PROPER WATERING
‎Cabbage needs consistent moisture. Irregular watering causes splitting of heads and poor formation. Water 2–3 times per week depending on weather.

‎6. FERTILIZER APPLICATION
‎At planting, use DAP or manure. After 2-3 weeks top dress using CAN or NPK 2–3. Repeat after another 2–3 weeks. Avoid excessive nitrogen, it can delay head formation.

‎7. PEST CONTROL
‎Common pests include aphids, Diamondback moth and Cutworms. Use recommended pesticides (rotate chemicals). Introduce natural methods such as Neem extracts and Ash dusting (local method)

‎8. DISEASE MANAGEMENT
‎Common diseases include Black rot and Downy mildew. To control use crop rotation (avoid planting cabbage repeatedly in same land) and certified seeds. For example rotate cabbage with beans → maize to reduces pests, diseases, and improves soil fertility. Avoid overhead irrigation late in the day.

‎9. W**D CONTROL
‎Weed regularly especially early stages. Mulching helps retain moisture and reduce weeds.

‎10. TIMING & CLIMATE
‎Cabbages grow best in cool climates (15–25°C). Avoid extreme heat, it leads to poor head formation

‎11. HARVESTING
‎Cabbage become ready in 70–120 days depending on variety. Harvest when heads are firm and compact. Do not delay → heads may split

‎12. MARKET PLANNING
‎Plant with market timing in mind (prices fluctuate). Target high-demand seasons.
‎Consider selling direct to markets, hotels and groceries.
