Butternut is a nutritious, high-value crop rich in vitamins A and C. It is used for soups, baking, puree, animal feed, and export markets.

It thrives in well-drained loam soils, pH 5.5–7.5, with temperatures of 18–30°C and moderate rainfall.

Farmers plant about 2,500–3,000 butternut plants per acre under proper spacing and management.

Yields can reach 10–20 tonnes per acre, with good markets generating attractive returns and improving farm profitability.

Topdressing maize requires precision to maximize nutrient uptake and reduce fertilizer losses in the field. Correct placement improves nutrient-use efficiency and supports stronger crop development.

Apply fertilizer approximately 5–8 cm away from the maize stalk and place it 3–5 cm deep into the soil. This distance allows roots to access nutrients effectively without direct fertilizer contact.

Applying fertilizer too close can burn roots and damage young plants. Proper spacing enhances nitrogen absorption, promotes vigorous growth, and increases the crop’s grain yield potential.

Kenyan farmers are now at risk of losing up to 50% of their harvest because of fake and counterfeit seeds, KEPHIS has warned.

But here is the frightening part:

Some farmers had already discovered this months ago.

In March, a farmer from Lamu reached out to me after buying maize seeds packaged in a famous brand.

14 days later, most had not germinated.
The few that grew were weak and of poor quality.
He had to buy seeds again and restart planting.

Last year it was fake fertilizer.
This year it is fake seeds.

How many farmers are silently suffering losses while the country keeps talking about “food security”?

This is why I keep saying farmers must preserve traditional seeds and community seed reserves.

A traditional seed may fail because of weather.

But at least it will not betray the farmer.
