A day-old chick arrives with its first meal already packed inside. Just before hatching, the chick pulls the remaining yolk into its body. That reserve can sustain it for roughly 48 to 72 hours, which is exactly why day-old chicks can be transported without feed or water on short journeys.

On Day 14, the chick has to get into position — or it won't survive hatching

This is one of the quiet, critical moments of incubation.

On Day 14, the chick repositions itself lengthwise inside the shell, moving its head toward the air cell at the blunt end of the egg.

Why does this matter? Because in a few days, that air cell is where the chick will take its very first breath — before it even cracks the shell.

Get the position wrong, and hatching becomes far harder. Every day of this process has a purpose.

Growth in the first week is fast and visible:

🔸 Days 1–3: Chick relies partly on its absorbed yolk sac; starter feed and water intake

🔸 Days 4–5: Down feathers start to look fuller; chicks become noticeably more active and mobile

🔸Days 6–7: Wing feathers begin emerging; chicks start showing more independent behavior — pecking, exploring, less huddling

By the end of week 1, body weight has typically already increased several times over from hatch weight — one of the fastest growth periods in a chicken's life.

Sometimes embryos form in the fertilized egg but the development process fails and the embryo dies.

you'll see a distinct ring of blood or a blood spot with no further vein branching — this means the embryo started but died.

These are actually the highest bacterial risk because decomposition has already begun so remove them.
