A school shamba can do more than grow vegetables; it can grow knowledge, healthy meals and changemakers.

As schools reopen, City Shamba has been getting school gardens ready for a new season of learning, growing and nourishing. Through Shamba Shuleni, these spaces connect regenerative school meals with hands-on learning; helping learners understand where their food comes from, explore simple farming techniques through 4K Clubs, and discover that farming can be innovative, fun and cool. 🥬👩🏾‍🌾

Because when we grow food at school, we’re not just feeding learners; we’re growing the next generation of food-system changemakers. 🌍

🌱 Growing Food. Growing Futures. Growing Resilient Schools. 🌱

This week, we have been in Kisumu, co-creating the plan for the AfriFOODLinks project. And what an incredible journey it has been! Across 8 schools in Kisumu, approximately #9,237 learners are benefiting from that are transforming both education and nutrition. 🌿📚🍽️

👩🏽‍🌾 Primary school learners are gaining practical agricultural skills by using the farms as living classrooms, learning agroecology, environmental stewardship, and food production through hands-on experience.

🥕 Early Childhood learners are enjoying as fresh vegetables harvested from the school gardens are integrated into their daily diets, supporting and healthier growth.

Together, these school farms have:
✅ Strengthened practical agriculture learning
✅ Improved access to nutritious vegetables for school meals
✅ Increased learner engagement through 4K and Environmental Clubs
✅ Generated income from surplus produce to support school feeding programmes and sustain the farms
✅ Built strong among school leadership, teachers, learners, and communities
✅ Laid a solid foundation for long-term sustainability through locally led management and partnerships

As the Afrifoodlinks project transitions, these schools are demonstrating that school gardens are much more than farms - they are hubs for learning, nutrition, resilience, and community transformation. 🌍💚

A huge appreciation to all the schools, teachers, learners, partners, and communities who continue to nurture this vision of healthier children and sustainable food systems.

How can Climate Action Shape Healthier Futures in Africa?

City Shamba is proud to be featured in a documentary released by the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, U. of London, in partnership with African Population and Health Research Center (APHRC) and African Institute for Development Policy (AFIDEP) through the initiative exploring the critical intersection between climate action and . 🤝

The documentary highlights an important reality: 🌍 Africa is not only vulnerable to climate change, but it is also a hub of adaptation, innovation, and homegrown solutions. 💡🌱

At City Shamba, we believe that transforming is one of the most powerful climate actions we can take. Through food systems localization, agroecological farming practices 🚜🌿, and community-based solutions 🤲, we are demonstrating that 🍌🥬🥕 - supporting healthier people while protecting our environment. 🌳💚

🧑‍🌾Today at City Shamba, we had the pleasure of hosting students from Machakos University pursuing a course in Agriculture Education & Extension. 🌱

📌As we walked through the farm🌾, shared ideas, and had meaningful conversations, one thing stood out, that agriculture is no longer just about farming. It’s about innovation, sustainability, and bold thinking.

💫The future of our agri-systems will be shaped by young people like these, future stewards💪, professionals, and leaders who must embrace a mindset shift💡 toward building resilient and sustainable food systems.

The seeds🫘 of transformation are planted not only in the soil, but in the minds of those who will lead tomorrow 🌿

This week, We are hosting grade 4, 5 & 6 pupils from Nairobi Christian School at City Shamba as part of an educational tour aimed at enhancing their understanding of Agriculture, Nutrition and healthy living.
During the visits, they get an opportunity to engage in various farming activities including, nursery setup, transplanting, farm tools identification, feeding poultry and rabbits, fishing and other many integrated farming practices.
The sessions provide a hands-on learning experience, allowing the pupils to appreciate the importance of growing their own food, healthy eating habits and environmental conservation.
Such visits and activities play a key role in bridging classroom knowledge with practical skills, fostering curiosity and nurturing a generation that is better informed on nutrition and food systems.
