Lasting conservation begins with communities taking collective responsibility for the natural resources around them.

The Pongwe-Kidimu Community Forest Association (POKI CFA) represents this spirit of local stewardship, bringing communities together to support the restoration and protection of Kenya’s coastal mangrove forests.

These ecosystems are vital for biodiversity, provide important benefits to coastal livelihoods and help strengthen resilience to climate change.

This Mashujaa Day, we celebrate the communities behind POKI CFA for their commitment to safeguarding our natural heritage and building a greener, more resilient future for generations to come.

When communities unite to protect nature, their impact reaches far beyond the forest.

Behind every thriving forest is a community committed to protecting it.

The Mwatsumbo Community Forest Association (CFA), whose name brings together Mwache, Tsunza, Mbuguni and Bonje, represents the power of collective action in conserving Kenya’s coastal ecosystems.

Through community-led efforts to restore and protect mangrove forests, local communities play a vital role in safeguarding biodiversity, supporting livelihoods and strengthening resilience along the coast.

This Mashujaa Day, we celebrate the people of Mwatsumbo CFA for their contribution to environmental conservation and for demonstrating that lasting change begins when communities unite around a shared responsibility to protect nature for generations to come.

When communities protect nature, everyone benefits.

Dr. Isaac Kalua Green is a Kenyan environmentalist and eco-entrepreneur whose work champions practical, community-driven solutions to environmental conservation and sustainable development.

Through the Green Africa Foundation, he has helped promote environmental awareness and action, including the Plant Your Age movement, which encourages people to plant trees in line with their age.

His work reminds us that protecting our environment is a shared responsibility, one that begins with individual action and grows through collective commitment.

This Mashujaa Day, we celebrate Dr. Kalua Green’s contribution to building a greener Kenya and inspiring more people to take an active role in safeguarding our natural heritage.

𝙋𝙧𝙤𝙛. 𝙒𝙖𝙣𝙜𝙖𝙧𝙞 𝙈𝙖𝙖𝙩𝙝𝙖𝙞 🇰🇪

Few Kenyans have shaped the environmental movement as profoundly as Prof. Wangari Maathai, the pioneering environmentalist, founder of The Green Belt Movement, and the first African woman to receive the Nobel Peace Prize in 2004.

Through community-led tree planting, she mobilised women and communities to restore degraded landscapes while advancing livelihoods, democracy and human rights.

Her legacy reminds us that environmental conservation is not just about protecting trees; it is also about empowering people, strengthening communities and safeguarding the future of our planet.

This Mashujaa Day, we celebrate a Kenyan icon whose courage and conviction continue to inspire generations to turn environmental concern into meaningful action.

Her legacy lives on in every tree planted and every community empowered.

Happy Mashujaa Day! 🇰🇪

As we honour the courage, sacrifice and resilience of Kenya’s heroes, past and present, may we continue their legacy by serving our communities, protecting our environment and building a greener, stronger Kenya for generations to come.

What if crop residues and clean woody waste could become part of the climate solution?

Biochar is a stable, carbon-rich material made by heating suitable biomass in a low-oxygen environment through a process called **pyrolysis**. Instead of allowing organic waste to decompose or be openly burned, pyrolysis converts it into a porous material that can support soil health and store some of the carbon from the original biomass.

When produced and applied responsibly, biochar may help improve soil structure, water retention and nutrient use while supporting more circular farming systems.

But biochar is not automatically a climate solution. Its benefits depend on the quality of the feedstock, production process, environmental safeguards and how well its impacts are measured.

At Furaha & Baraka Farms, we believe meaningful climate action starts with understanding the science, asking honest questions and measuring what matters.
