Over the past few weeks, I’ve been having difficult conversations with buyers, logistics partners, and fellow exporters.

And one thing is clear, the Middle East crisis is not just affecting meat and perishable products exports. It is shaking the entire export ecosystem, including those of us in macadamia and cashew trade.

For many African exporters, the Gulf region has always been a dependable market:
✔ Strong demand
✔ Predictable logistics
✔ Premium pricing

But today, that reliability is being tested.

Delayed shipments. Rising freight costs. Uncertainty in delivery timelines. Buyers becoming cautious.

As an exporter, you quickly realize:
Your biggest risk is not your product,it’s your route to market.

This moment has forced me to reflect deeply on how we build export businesses.

Because beyond pricing and quality, resilience is becoming the real competitive advantage.

For me, this means:
• Rethinking market diversification beyond traditional hubs
• Strengthening relationships, not just transactions
• Exploring flexible logistics models
• Preparing for disruptions before they happen not after

There is no doubt this period is challenging.

But it is also revealing something important:
The future of export business will belong to those who can adapt faster than the disruption.

As someone deeply invested in the macadamia and cashew value chain, I see this not just as a crisis but as a turning point.

We either evolve… or we get left behind.

Curious to hear from others in the export space how are you navigating this shift?

May this special day bring peace, happiness and endless bkessings to you and your loved ones.Eid Mubarak

Kenya is stepping into a transformative chapter in its agricultural export journey, following a landmark announcement by Mutahi Kagwe. Beginning May 1, 2026, Kenyan agricultural products will gain duty-free access to the vast market of China—a move poised to redefine trade dynamics for farmers and agribusinesses across Kenya.

This directive is more than a policy shift; it is a strategic gateway to one of the world’s largest consumer markets. By eliminating tariff barriers, Kenya is positioning its farmers—from macadamia and cashew producers to tea, coffee, and horticultural exporters—to compete more favorably on a global scale.

For years, access to international markets has been constrained by cost barriers and complex trade regulations. This new development signals a decisive effort by the government to unlock value for local producers, enhance foreign exchange earnings, and stimulate rural economic growth. It is expected to catalyze investment in quality standards, processing capacity, and supply chain efficiency—key pillars for sustained export competitiveness.

For agribusiness leaders and exporters, this is a call to action. The opportunity is significant, but so is the responsibility to meet the scale, consistency, and quality demanded by the Chinese market. Strengthening compliance, certifications, and strategic partnerships will be critical to fully harness this opening.

Ultimately, this initiative reflects Kenya’s broader vision—to transition from a raw commodity exporter to a value-driven, globally competitive agricultural powerhouse. And with China’s doors opening wider, the future of Kenyan agriculture looks not only promising, but profoundly expansive.
