Exploring Large-Scale Bell Pepper, Artichoke, and Asparagus Farming in East Africa: A Journey of Challenges and Possibilities

When Ameva decided to explore sourcing commercial-grade horticultural crops like bell peppers, artichokes, and asparagus in East Africa, we had a clear goal: find reliable farms capable of large-scale production to meet the demands of a processing factory with a capacity of 30 tons per day. However, the journey revealed both the immense potential and significant gaps in the region’s agricultural sector.

The Search in Kenya

Our initial focus was on Kenya, a country renowned for its agricultural exports. For two weeks, we spoke to farmers, visited various farms, and consulted experts. Unfortunately, we quickly realized that the majority of bell pepper, artichoke, and asparagus production in Kenya is on a small scale. While the produce quality was often excellent, the volumes were insufficient for our requirements.

The challenge lay in scalability. Many farmers lacked the infrastructure, technical expertise, or financial resources to expand their operations to meet commercial demands. This was discouraging, as Kenya’s agricultural potential remains largely untapped in these specific crops.

Shifting Focus to Tanzania

With limited options in Kenya, we shifted our focus to Tanzania, particularly the Arusha region, known for its favorable climate and fertile soils. Over a week, we engaged with local farmers and stakeholders to assess their capacity for large-scale production. Recognizing the need for a more structured approach, we sought out Tanzania’s horticulture agency to provide leads.

Engaging with the Horticulture Agency

We had a productive meeting with the agency’s senior management, where we presented our vision: to create a guaranteed steady uptake of farm produce and establish a processing factory. This would not only provide a stable market for farmers but also drive economic growth in the region.

The agency appreciated our goals and committed to assisting us in identifying farms with the potential to scale up production. We emphasized that while Ameva is not interested in farming directly, we are keen to partner with farmers and support them through guaranteed contracts, technical training, and long-term collaborations.

The Path Forward

While the search has been challenging, it has also been eye-opening. The East African region holds immense potential for horticulture, but realizing it requires investment, partnerships, and a shared vision between stakeholders. Our journey has underscored the importance of collaboration and the need for farmers to scale operations to meet global demand.

We remain optimistic about finding the right partners to bring this vision to life, paving the way for Ameva to revolutionize horticulture in East Africa while empowering local farmers.
