The food we eat and how it is produced can improve our health, increase biodiversity and reduce carbon emissions. However, the food industry today and vested interests would have us thread an increasingly well-worn path to ill health, environmental damage, increased carbon emissions and pollution of our planet and bodies.

These are some of the thoughts of Dr Sean Ownes, a member of Irish Doctors for the Environment and the chair of “The Climate and Health Alliance” who in 2023 launched a new and ground-breaking report examining in detail the connection between our food health and the health of our planet, he was kind enough to provide his thoughts below:

There is currently a syndemic of unhealthy poor diets and related chronic disease paired with climate change and critical biodiversity loss. The problems with the Irish healthcare system can be summed up in one word: capacity. The problems with Ireland’s food system might also be summed up in one word: sustainability.

This report is unique it is the first time that multiple healthcare institutions, such as UCD, RCSI, ICGP, RCPI, the Irish Heart Foundation and many more have all arrived at a consensus that the current Irish diet is causing great harm to people and planet, while also recognising planetary boundaries and the need to live within them.

Have our diets improved in the last three years?

The greatest challenge will be making forward progress free from the undue influence of vested interests and powerful lobby groups. We need to see this transition as a generational opportunity for not only health and a viable healthcare system, but also for the Irish economy and for rural Ireland now and in the future. Healthy and sustainable diets don’t need to be invented; we only need the policies to make choosing them the best option.

The report is a well-researched detailed document, and you can copy and paste the link below.

Maybe, just maybe AI is going to give us the one thing that most people have been craving...👇🏾

For 40 years, the deal for white collar workers was simple: humans operate the computers, the computers do the work

We built our entire economy around that deal. Offices, commutes, salaries paid for our competence behind a screen...

Then AI came along, and started breaking that deal.

Computers can now operate themselves. Which means the job most of us were trained for, the job our parents pushed us towards, the job that defined modern adulthood, appears to be a temporary one.

Maybe we were a biological workaround until the machines got clever enough to use themselves? 🤔

I think we'll look back at this era the way we look at switchboard operators plugging cables into a board to connect a phone call, or elevator operators sitting on a stool all day pulling a brass lever, or film projectionists changing reels halfway through a movie at the cinema.

Necessary for a moment, but pretty absurd in hindsight.

It'll become obvious that a life spent working behind a screen was a strange, brief chapter in human history, not a professional inevitability.

The work that's left when computers do computer work is thankfully the more interesting stuff

Creativity in its rawest form. Relationships. Everything else that was always irreplaceably human.

I'm looking forward to whatever that is... 👊🏾❤️

The future of farming is no longer just about yield — it is about resilience, health, sustainability, and trust.

Across the world, agriculture is undergoing a major transformation as consumers become more conscious about where their food comes from and how it is produced. Terms like regenerative agriculture, climate-smart farming, food traceability, and sustainable food systems are rapidly becoming the new standard for modern agriculture. Experts increasingly view regenerative and organic farming as essential to restoring soil health, improving biodiversity, and building climate resilience.

In Africa, this shift presents a powerful opportunity.

With rising concerns around food security, environmental degradation, and long-term farmer sustainability, the continent is uniquely positioned to lead the next era of agriculture through innovation-driven and environmentally responsible farming practices. Regenerative farming models are gaining momentum because they not only improve environmental outcomes, but also strengthen economic resilience for farmers by reducing dependency on costly external inputs.

At Agoro Farms, we see agriculture as more than production — we see it as stewardship.

Our vision is rooted in building a farming ecosystem that nourishes both people and the planet. By embracing sustainable and climate-smart farming practices, we are committed to producing healthier food while contributing to long-term environmental sustainability.

The future farm is data-driven, environmentally conscious, and deeply connected to community wellbeing. It combines innovation with nature, modern techniques with responsible land management, and productivity with sustainability. From soil health and water conservation to smarter crop management and sustainable poultry production, every step matters in creating resilient food systems for future generations.

At Agoro Farms, we are proud to be part of this agricultural evolution.

We believe the future of farming in Kenya and across Africa will be shaped by businesses that prioritize:
Sustainability
Environmental responsibility
Innovation and smart farming
Healthier food systems
Community empowerment

The journey toward regenerative and sustainable agriculture is not a trend — it is the future.

And at Agoro Farms, we are committed to helping bring that future to life.
