LATE AT NIGHT, MY SMART SCALE ALERTED ME THAT A 115-LB "GUEST" HAD WEIGHED IN WHILE I WAS AT MY BEST FRIEND'S BACHELORETTE PARTY — I RUSHED HOME TO CONFRONT MY HUSBAND AND WAS LEFT SPEECHLESS.
I almost missed the alert entirely.
The party was in full swing at a downtown hotel, champagne flowing as we celebrated my best friend’s upcoming wedding. I planned to sleep over—no need to go home until morning.
Back at my house, my husband watched Liam and Ava.
He reassured me: “I've got this,” tossing my worries aside.
When I felt my phone buzz, I assumed it was from the group chat.
It was the smart scale notification.
New weigh-in detected.

Weight: 115 lbs.
I stared at the number.
My husband is well above 200 pounds. Both kids aren’t close to 115 even together.
I showed the message to Hannah, Brooke, Lila, Jenna, and Marissa.
Laughter faded fast as realization set in.
Brooke’s face tightened. “Is there someone at your house?”
My stomach dropped. “The alert is from right now.”
Hannah was already moving. “We need to go.”
In moments, we were in a taxi en route to my home.
My friends waited in the running car as I walked to a dark front porch.
Inside was silence.
No kids’ jackets hanging.
Dread settled in my chest.
I heard soft voices from upstairs.
I climbed the stairs with a racing heart.
Sounds came from the bedroom.
The door opened to a sight that took my breath away.
