Why opt for a point of lay birds (POL):
Point-of-lay hens are chickens that are around 16-20 weeks old, that's they are on early stages of laying, or they are beginning to lay.
Pros of point of lay birds:
Faster Egg Production:
Immediate egg-laying: POL hens typically start laying eggs within a week or two after purchase, so you start seeing returns (eggs) much sooner compared to raising chicks.
No Waiting: You save 4-5 months that you would otherwise wait for chicks to mature.
Reduced Care and Maintenance:
Easier to manage: POL hens are more self-sufficient compared to chicks. They have been weaned off starter feeds and can eat adult layer feed, so there's less worry about feeding specifics.
Healthier birds: By 16-20 weeks, the birds have progressed past the fragile chick stage, where disease or management mistakes are less likely to affect them.
No Need for Brooding:
With day-old chicks, you need to provide a warm brooding environment. This can be energy-intensive and costly. POL hens are already mature enough to be comfortable in regular poultry housing.
Better For Farm Profit:
Quick returns: Since they are ready to lay eggs almost immediately, POL hens allow for faster cash flow, especially if you're planning to sell eggs or start a small egg business.
Stable production: You can select POL hens from reputable sources, thereby reducing the likelihood of raising weak or unproductive birds.
Easier to Assess Quality:
You can check the overall health and quality of the bird before purchasing. With day-old chicks, it’s harder to determine their future productivity (egg-laying ability or health) until later on.
