Good evening, after a loooong break. We are now back. Continue sending your questions about layers poultry farming and we will be responding to them.

Another question I got today: Between commercial layers and improved Kienyeji, which one is the best for a beginner in poultry farming?

30/12/2025

Why is it risky to keep your commercial layers birds with kienyeji (indigenous)?
Please, do not dare to keep your commercial layers in the same compound with kienyeji ones. One, kienyeji birds are disease carriers, they carry diseases and infections without showing the signs. For example, Newcastle disease, Fowl pox, Coccidiosis, Infectious bronchitis a few to mention. These diseases can wipe out your commercial layers in a blink of an eye. Commercial layers are very sensitive to diseases and infections, so take note of that. Kienyeji ones can live with such diseases and gain immunity with being affected. So it is wise not to keep the two flocks in the same compound. Reach us for any consultation. Happy New Year in Advance.

Despite being Festive season, some people are asking me whether they can rear both commercial layers and the Kienyeji birds within the same compound. I will be answering this is the next post.

Why opt for a point of lay birds (POL):
Point-of-lay hens are chickens that are around 16-20 weeks old, that's they are on early stages of laying, or they are beginning to lay.
Pros of point of lay birds:
Faster Egg Production:
Immediate egg-laying: POL hens typically start laying eggs within a week or two after purchase, so you start seeing returns (eggs) much sooner compared to raising chicks.
No Waiting: You save 4-5 months that you would otherwise wait for chicks to mature.
Reduced Care and Maintenance:
Easier to manage: POL hens are more self-sufficient compared to chicks. They have been weaned off starter feeds and can eat adult layer feed, so there's less worry about feeding specifics.
Healthier birds: By 16-20 weeks, the birds have progressed past the fragile chick stage, where disease or management mistakes are less likely to affect them.
No Need for Brooding:
With day-old chicks, you need to provide a warm brooding environment. This can be energy-intensive and costly. POL hens are already mature enough to be comfortable in regular poultry housing.
Better For Farm Profit:
Quick returns: Since they are ready to lay eggs almost immediately, POL hens allow for faster cash flow, especially if you're planning to sell eggs or start a small egg business.
Stable production: You can select POL hens from reputable sources, thereby reducing the likelihood of raising weak or unproductive birds.
Easier to Assess Quality:
You can check the overall health and quality of the bird before purchasing. With day-old chicks, it’s harder to determine their future productivity (egg-laying ability or health) until later on.

Should I start with a day old chick? Here are some insights;
Starting a layer poultry farm with day-old chicks gives the farmer control over the entire lifecycle of the birds, that is, one can monitor them from day 1 to the rest of life cycle. Again, chicks are cheaper than grown pullets, so farmer can choose them due to lower initial cost and budget. Again, farmer monitors the birds including feeding, drinking, vaccination and entire health management of the birds. Since vaccination one of the critical stages in layers farming, and skipping one vaccine can danger the birds' life, the farmer is keen to ensure correct vaccines are administered at the correct timelines. Some questions I keep on getting:
1. When starting a layers poultry farm, should I start with a day old chick?
2. Why should I opt for a point-of-lay birds?
In the next post, I will be answering each question extensively based on pros and cons of each.
