YOUR WASTEWATER TREATMENT PLANT. LOCALLY FABRICATED.

A wastewater treatment system is designed around the actual hydraulic and organic load— not a generic catalogue specification.

At Kanku, we design and locally fabricate treatment systems based on your:

• Flow rates & peak flows
• COD, BOD, TSS & other pollutant loads
• Influent variability
• Required effluent quality
• Available footprint & site constraints
• Process requirements and operational conditions

From process design and equipment selection to fabrication, installation and commissioning, we build systems around the wastewater you actually generate.

Same flow does NOT mean same treatment requirement.

Get the design basis right before you invest in the plant.

An underperforming treatment plant does not automatically need a larger plant.

First, determine whether you actually have a capacity problem.

At Kanku, an ETP performance review starts by looking beyond:

❌ “The effluent quality is failing.”

We investigate:

1. What was the plant originally designed to treat?

Design flow.

Design COD.

Design BOD.

Design TSS.

pH range.

Peak loading.

2. What is the plant receiving today?

Actual flow.

Actual pollutant concentration.

Daily and peak pollutant loads.

Production-related variability.

Chemical and cleaning contributions.

3. Where is the process bottleneck?

Is the limitation:

→ Hydraulic?
→ Biological?
→ Chemical?
→ Aeration?
→ Sludge handling?
→ Equipment performance?

Because increasing plant size without identifying the bottleneck can mean spending capital on the wrong solution.

THE RIGHT QUESTION IS NOT:

“Do we need a bigger ETP?”

THE RIGHT QUESTION IS:

“What is preventing our existing ETP from achieving its required performance?”

A properly engineered answer begins with data.

Before approving your next ETP upgrade, understand the gap between your plant's DESIGN BASIS and its ACTUAL OPERATING LOAD.

YOUR FLOW RATE HAS NOT INCREASED.

SO WHY IS YOUR ETP FAILING?

Because wastewater treatment plants do not respond to volume alone.

They respond to load.

Here's a simplified example:

Your ETP receives:

100 m³/day × COD of 1,000 mg/L

That is very different from receiving:

100 m³/day × COD of 3,000 mg/L

Same hydraulic flow.

Three times the organic load.

And that changes everything.

Higher-than-design loading can result in:

⚠️ Biological process instability
⚠️ Oxygen demand exceeding aeration capacity
⚠️ Reduced treatment efficiency
⚠️ Increased chemical consumption
⚠️ Sludge handling challenges
⚠️ Final effluent quality failures

This is why an ETP that has operated for years can suddenly begin underperforming — even when production volume appears unchanged.

The real investigation should compare:

ACTUAL FLOW
vs
DESIGN FLOW

AND

ACTUAL POLLUTANT LOAD
vs
DESIGN POLLUTANT LOAD

The question for your operations team:

When was the last time your wastewater was analysed against the original ETP design parameters?

Because your factory may have changed.

Your raw materials may have changed.

Your production processes may have changed.

But your ETP?

It may still be treating yesterday's wastewater.

👇 Would you know if your current effluent load has exceeded your original plant design?

A plant rated at 100 m³/day sounds straightforward.

But capacity is not determined by flow alone.

Two factories can discharge exactly the same volume of wastewater while placing completely different loads on their treatment plants.

The difference?

POLLUTANT LOAD.

A 100 m³/day ETP receiving wastewater with:

• Higher COD
• Higher BOD
• Increased TSS
• Oil and grease
• Variable pH
• Cleaning chemicals
• Production shock loads

may be operating far beyond its original design basis — even when the flow meter says 100 m³/day.

This is where many wastewater decisions go wrong.

Management sees:

➡️ “The plant is designed for our daily volume.”

The engineer needs to ask:

➡️ “Designed for which wastewater characteristics?”

Because m³/day is only half the equation.

This week, we're breaking down one of the most misunderstood concepts in industrial wastewater treatment:

ETP DESIGN CAPACITY vs ACTUAL OPERATING LOAD.

Follow this series.

Your plant's problem may not be where you think it is.

Your system is working. But is your water slowly damaging it?

Heating systems. Cooling systems. Boilers. Closed-loop systems. Process equipment.

Where water circulates, problems can build up.

⚠️ Corrosion can damage pipes and equipment.
🦠 Biological growth can affect system performance.
🪨 Scale and deposits can reduce efficiency and restrict flow.

The right water treatment programme isn't just about treating water.

It's about helping protect the systems that depend on it.

At Kanku, we provide water treatment solutions and chemical programmes. designed around your system and its operating conditions.

Protect the system. Optimize performance. Manage your water.

🏭 **YOUR FACTORY IS CONNECTED TO THE SEWER. PROBLEM SOLVED?**

**Not necessarily.**

Being connected to a sewer does **not** automatically mean your industrial wastewater can go in untreated.

🚽 Domestic sewage ≠ 🏭 Industrial effluent

Domestic sewage typically comes from:

* Toilets
* Showers
* Sinks
* Household activities

Industrial wastewater can contain very different loads depending on the production process, including:

🧪 Chemicals
🛢️ Oils & grease
🧱 Suspended solids
⚗️ High COD & BOD
🌱 Nutrients
🔩 Heavy metals
🧫 Process-specific contaminants

These contaminants can affect the performance of downstream wastewater treatment systems and may create environmental and compliance risks if not properly managed.

**The important question isn't simply: “Are we connected to the sewer?”**

It's:

👉 **“Is our industrial effluent suitable for discharge into that sewer?”**

Before discharge, businesses should understand the **quality and characteristics of their wastewater**, monitor key parameters and ensure appropriate pre-treatment where required.

💧 Don't assume. Test.

Kanku Kenya helps businesses **test, analyse and treat water and wastewater** — from wastewater characterisation to treatment solutions and ongoing management.

Connected to the sewer? Make sure what's going into it is fit for purpose.**
