The biggest question in chicken farming.

After you gain skills, where do you start. Chickens,
Feed,
Housing.

Here is the honest answer.
You start.

This is my story.

I began with five kienyeji chickens πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚.

No house.
No formulated feed.
They scavenged.
We shared one room. At night we slept together. Morning came and everyone went out to hustle.

After months, eggs started appearing under the bed. Chicks followed. Numbers grew. Pressure followed growth.

The room became small. Losses started showing. Control dropped. I saw the problem clearly. Space was limiting the business.

I built a chicken coop. Big vision. Eight units. Reality check. All chickens fitted in one unit πŸ˜‚. The structure was ahead of the numbers, but the vision was right.

Then I introduced feed as a supplement. They ate in the morning, then went scavenging. When feed ran out, they went full scavenging. Egg laying continued. Production stayed steady.

Another problem showed up. Broody hens. Twenty one days without eggs. Cash flow slowed. Business suffered.

I made a decision.
I stopped natural hatching.
I took eggs to the incubator.
This changed everything.

Numbers increased fast.
The eight units filled up.
Space pressure returned, but this time growth was planned.
Structure met demand.

The business lesson is simple.

Start with what you have. Skills come first. Numbers create pressure. Pressure forces structure. Systems grow after clarity.

You can start with chickens and allow scavenging as you position housing. You can start with a coop and introduce birds slowly. Both paths work.

Waiting does not build a farm.
Starting does.

Start. Restart. Grow.

Feed your chickens right or lose money without noticing.

Start with a feeding plan that fits each stage of your flock. Growth changes fast, so your feed must match the demand.

Day old to 4 weeks
I Use starter pellets and some time (chick mash )Your chicks need high protein for fast muscle and organ development. Give clean water at all times. Keep feed fresh to avoid contamination.

Week 5 to point of lay
I Shift to growers mash. Protein drops as birds build frame and body size. Energy levels help them form strong bones. Avoid high calcium at this stage, it stresses the kidneys.

Laying stage
Use layers mash. Calcium increases to support eggshell formation. Protein balances egg production. Maintain steady feeding times to avoid stress.

Feed quality
Starter pellets offer about 18 to 20 percent protein. Growers mash offers about 14 to 16 percent protein. Layers mash offers about 16 to 18 percent protein with higher calcium. Your feed choice depends on availability and budget. Commercial feed offers consistency. Formulated feed helps you reduce cost and use local ingredients.

Vegetables
On top of my feeds i Offer greens to indoor birds to improve gut health. Birds in free range settings scavenge and supplement their diet with insects and seeds. This improves nutrient variety.

Keep records. Track feed use, weight, and egg production. Small adjustments increase performance.

Farming is a business. The goal is profit. The secret is knowing your target market. These are the people who will buy your product.

Start with products that are affordable to venture into and easy to sell. Don’t stress about quantity. Begin with what your money allows and what your market can absorb.

Never ignore the starting point. That one goat, those 10 eggs, those 100 cabbages. Small beginnings teach you, and they bring income. From there, you grow.

Start small. Learn fast. Make money.
