🌧️🐄 Rainy Season Dairy Tips: Feed & Nutrition

Kenya’s rainy season brings lush pastures, but wet and cold weather can affect your cows’ health and milk yield. Here’s how to keep your herd thriving:

1️⃣ Balance Wet Grass with Dry Fodder – Prevent bloating and provide enough energy with hay, silage, or maize stover.
2️⃣ Energy-Rich Feed – Cold weather increases energy needs. Add maize germ, molasses, or dairy concentrates.
3️⃣ Minerals & Vitamins – Support immunity with mineral blocks and vitamins A, D, E.
4️⃣ Clean Water – Ensure fresh water is always available to aid digestion and milk production.
5️⃣ Smart Feeding – Feed smaller portions frequently, avoid muddy areas, and rotate feed sources.

Healthy cows = consistent milk production! Start these tips today to keep your herd strong through the rainy season.

Rainy Season Dairy Tips for Kenyan Farmers 🐄

The rainy season is here! While pastures flourish, cold and wet weather brings challenges for your cows. Here’s how to keep your herd healthy and milk production steady:

1️⃣ Keep Cows Dry & Warm: Provide shelters with good drainage and dry bedding to prevent mastitis and foot problems.

2️⃣ Smart Feeding: Wet grass can upset digestion. Supplement with hay, silage, and essential minerals to keep cows strong.

3️⃣ Clean Water & Milking: Ensure fresh water and maintain hygiene during milking to protect milk quality.

4️⃣ Protect Hooves & Udders: Use footbaths, trim hooves, and check for signs of lameness or mastitis regularly.

5️⃣ Safe Grazing: Avoid waterlogged pastures and rotate grazing areas for safer, nutritious feeding.

💡 Proactive care during the rainy season keeps your cows healthy and your milk yields high!

In Gatanga, the sun is no longer just supporting pasture growth — it is powering progress.

Kigoro Farmers Dairy Cooperative has embraced solar energy to run milk cooling and processing operations, significantly reducing electricity costs by nearly 70%. This shift has strengthened our financial position, allowing us to improve farmer payouts and reinvest in growth.

By lowering operational expenses, the cooperative has increased profitability while maintaining stable and competitive milk prices for our members. The impact goes beyond income — it supports long-term sustainability for over 1,600 farmers who depend on dairy as their main livelihood.

Environmentally, the transition to solar energy has reduced our carbon footprint and dependence on grid power, positioning Kigoro Dairy as a forward-thinking, climate-conscious cooperative.

Clean energy is not just an alternative — it is now part of our strategy for resilience, sustainability, and shared prosperity.

At Kigoro Dairy, growth is green, and the future is sustainable.

Kigoro Dairy Farmers Cooperative Society recently benefited from a capacity-building training under the Kenya Jobs and Economic Transformation (KJET) Program — a World Bank-supported initiative by the Government of Kenya through the Ministry of Cooperatives and MSMEs (MSEA).

The training strengthened our governance, financial management, and operational systems, positioning us for sustainable growth and better service delivery to our farmers.

Building on these lessons, we are now moving forward with bold expansion plans. Kigoro Dairy is scaling up production of our signature yoghurts and venturing into cheesemaking to increase value addition and market opportunities.

At the same time, we are working toward completing the solarization of our factory to reduce costs and embrace clean energy solutions.

Our goal is simple: higher profits that translate into better milk prices and improved livelihoods for our farmers.

The future of Kigoro Dairy is green and gold — sustainable, innovative, and farmer-centered.

12/02/2026

For Kigoro Dairy Farmers Cooperative Society, the future of farming is both green and gold. Leveraging the foundational lessons from the KJET training, the cooperative is embarking on a bold expansion to scale up their signature yoghurts and venture into the craft of cheesemaking.
But for the Cooperative, this isn’t just about new products, it’s about a smarter, more sustainable way of doing business.

→ Stress directly lowers milk production

→ Planning allows farmers to prepare silage and hay early

→ Stored fodder ensures feeding continuity

→ Supplementary feeds fill nutritional gaps

→ Planned feeding improves cow body condition

→ Healthy cows resist diseases better
→ Consistent feeding supports stable milk yields
