Dr. Asha de Vos: Sri Lanka's Trailblazing Marine Biologist
​Dr. Asha de Vos is a world-renowned marine biologist, educator, and leading ocean conservationist from Sri Lanka. She gained international recognition specifically for her pioneering research on blue whales in the Northern Indian Ocean.

​Here are some key facts about Dr. Asha de Vos:

Education and Professional Background
​She obtained her first degree in Marine and Environmental Biology from the University of St. Andrews in Scotland.
​She earned a master’s degree from the University of Oxford and later received her Ph.D. in marine mammal research from the University of Western Australia.
​She is the first and only Sri Lankan to hold a Ph.D. in marine mammal research.

Unique Research Work

​Dr. Asha’s most famous discovery is her research on "Unconventional Blue Whales" living in the waters around Sri Lanka. While blue whales are generally migratory, she demonstrated that this particular population remains in Sri Lankan waters year-round.
​Her research succeeded in drawing global attention to the threats these whales face from international shipping lanes.
