Hiruni Wasana Silva is 23 years old and lives in Ratmalana, Colombo. She is still pursuing a degree in music at the University of Colombo. The eldest child in a family with a mother, father, sister and brother, she uses her skills to meet her daily expenses without having to answer to her parents for her needs. In this way, she started a business that creates and sells eco-friendly bags from raw cloth. It was called Mermaids Store and initially supplied bags to shops,
Her mother helps her with the bag stitching. Although she cannot earn much money, she told us that she never gave up despite the challenges, as she is happy with the feedback she has received.
She hopes to further expand her business through social media and use the knowledge gained from Sarvodaya's Project that Women Empowerment Initiative program to strengthen her business, improve financial management, and reach a local and international market.
