As we finish of putting trellis poles for our latest pinotage plot, we came across this massive red ants 🐜🐜🐜 colony with thousands of eggs. To complete our task we need to destroy this beautiful creation! Now we have a dillema! We however decided to relocated many that we could, sadly many were still destroyed!

It all these mean one thing, spring is here!

As we put trelis poles on a plot planted last year, we encounter a very shallow sandstone rockbed. Too shallow to bury poles, this means hand drilling the rock to the desired depth 💪🤲!

Last year we planted pinotage vines, this winter we are putting up poles and the first wire to trelis. With a very shallow soil profile, around 30 cm of top soil, followed by a very solid sand stone rockbed its not only creating a barrier to put in trelis poles but also vines growth becomes compromised. This we however overcome by putting a thick mulch grass which not only supress weeds but also improves soil fertility and structure and thus enhance good vine 🌿 development!

Earlier this week we had an honour of a visit! Andrea Mullineux and Chris Mullineux together with their children came not only to visit but to also give some tips and guidance!

18 years passed since plantation of the first chenin blanc vines, what started as a trial almost two decades ago by these men and women has slowly evolved to the present day Sani Wines.

Winter cover 🍀 and some mulch. We tested mulch the previous year and the outcome was amazing, improved soil structure and hence a more vibrant growth on vines 🌿. Lets see how this plot comes out to be the coming growing season!
