At the opening of Al Dikkrich, one of the long-standing traditions is to honor local couples celebrating milestone wedding anniversaries such as 25, 50, 60, or even 65 years of marriage. The couples are officially received and then take part in the opening parade through the old town as guests of honor.

At the official opening, the Mayor of Diekirch symbolically hands over the city key (Stadschlëssel) to the Mayor of Al Dikkrich, who is the ceremonial mayor of the festival. For the five days of the event, this symbolic mayor and the Schäfferot (board of aldermen) of Al Dikkrich are considered to be “in charge” of the festivities. It’s a light-hearted tradition that marks the official start of the festival.
