Honey, Malta and thousands of years of history… 🍯🐝🇲🇹
Living in Malta, sometimes we forget just how much history is hidden in the simplest things around us.
Honey is one of them.
Malta has been associated with honey since ancient times. The islands were known for their honey production, and beekeeping here can be traced back thousands of years. There are even ancient apiaries carved directly into the Maltese rock.
And here’s something I love: Malta's ancient name, Melite, has traditionally been associated with the Greek word meli, meaning honey — which is why Malta is often referred to historically as “the land of honey.” 🍯
And when you choose local Maltese honey, you're also supporting our beekeepers and the bees that play such an important role in our environment. 🐝🌼
In fact, Malta has its own endemic honeybee, Apis mellifera ruttneri, which was officially declared Malta's National Insect in 2024.
So next time you open a jar of Maltese honey, remember…
you’re tasting a little piece of Maltese history. 🇲🇹🍯
