Keep your nuts fresh and prevent spoilage all summer long with these key practices:
1. The Cold is Your FriendIn the Fridge: This is the best spot for your daily or weekly stash. The cool temperature slows down oxidation and prevents natural oils from going bad.In the Freezer: Ideal for bulk buys. Nuts have very little water content, so they freeze beautifully without changing texture. They don't even need to thaw before you use them in recipes!
2. Choose the Right ContainersGo Airtight: Air exposure accelerates rancidity. Transfer nuts to tightly sealed, thick glass containers or heavy-duty silicone/freezer bags with all the air pressed out.Block Odors: Nuts easily absorb the flavors of foods around them. Keep them far away from pungent items like onions, garlic, or strong cheeses.Portion Control: Divide large batches into smaller containers. This way, you only expose a small handful of nuts to room temperature at a time, protecting the rest from temperature fluctuations.
3. Handle With CareWait to Thaw: If you are eating nuts raw or serving them on their own from the freezer, let them come to room temperature while still sealed. This prevents condensation and moisture from making them soggy.
Roast to Restore: If you notice your nuts are slightly soft but not yet rancid, give them a 10-15 minute toast in oven.
