Behind every bottle is a story. Sometimes, it’s also a person whose generosity, kindness, and passion become inseparable from the spirit itself.

Today, we remember our friend, Maestro Mezcalero W***y Garcia.

As one of the earliest members of the Banhez cooperative, W***y welcomed everyone to his palenque, Santa Martha, with open arms, sharing not only his craft, but also the traditions, hospitality, and spirit of Oaxaca.

Thank you for opening your home, sharing your knowledge, and reminding us that mezcal has always been about community. Your legacy lives on in every bottle of Banhez and in everyone fortunate enough to have known you.

Five expressions. Five entirely different worlds in a glass. What makes each one truly singular is how it’s made. Every single expression at Banhez is crafted by an individual member of our cooperative. When a batch sells through, the next producer in our community takes the torch, bringing their own hands, their own knowledge, their own interpretation of that agave to the bottle. No two batches are ever exactly alike. That’s the magic of mezcal.

Mezcal isn’t a drink. It’s a lifetime of discovery. Banhez is just the beginning.

Before Banhez was a brand, it was a belief.

Francisco Javier Perez Cruz grew up in Oaxaca watching families pour everything into making mezcal, only to be forced apart in search of work. He knew that feeling firsthand. So he made a decision: if he could keep these hardworking families together and give them a common goal, they could build something lasting.

He cultivated Espadín alongside his brother Bertoldo. His mother started an agave nursery with women from the community. In 2004 he became president of the National Mezcal Council, secured federal support for local distilleries, and built a cooperative that still stands today, now led by him, alongside his son, Luis.

Banhez was never just about mezcal, but keeping families together. It still is.
