Feeding Joeboy

Feeding Joeboy Feeding Joeboy sets out to uncover, capture and share Malaysia's diverse culinary affairs, exciting surreal places and ground breaking events.

Feeding Joeboy started off as a Photo album in 2013 that soon evolve into a page in early 2014. This page journals my Malaysian journey through food, places and events as I undercover the beauty that lies on my own backyard for the world to sample, see and save as memories for a lifetime. In memoriam of my late auntie, Caroline Wong who went home to be with the Lord in July 2014.

Thereโ€™s something you get from old school bakeries you donโ€™t find in modern bakery.

The old school taste that has persevere the many years and is still drawing the crowd. Question is how long will they be around. Swinging by to my hometown Seremban after a brief trip to Port Dickson to pick up some of the delicacies on offer to bring home. I usually come to these places as they bring back memories when I was little when my father and late grandfather would buy these delicacies home for breakfast or tea. Here are the 3 old school bakehouse I recently went and try go to when am back in Seremban

I donโ€™t know why but I hope if you see this, you would visit

A simple Motherโ€™s Day affair at a restaurant with no one. And a flurry of why came from the family. I was even unsure if I made the right call. But I persevered, asked it was still open and gathered the family over a round table from the many to choose from. Two ladies helmed the restaurant. Only two items on the menu. Hainanese Chicken Chop and Hailam Mee. There had some packets of nasi lemak and mihun. Drinks. Biscuits. And that was it. Any normal people coming here would be worried. I naively ask why so empty and the lady told me the location of the shop, away from the main town centre of Port Dickson. People who visit come for the two main dishes. This is PD Fung Hai Kopitiam.

My verdict. Sad. Sad that this place is empty despite having good food. Very nice Hainanese Chicken Chop with a good batter, balanced sauce that is not overly savoury with thinly sliced fried potato. While my kid enjoyed this (her first time trying), I found the Hailam Mee better. It reminded me of a good Hailam Mee I had many years ago in Seremban. Had the authentic old Hainanese taste. Sauce was darker but the taste was on point, balance and sumptuous. I would have gone for seconds if not for a heavy breakfast. Good toast and drinks too, attributed to the charcoal stove I see in the kitchen. Loving the old beer glasses with gold rim. I hope if you see this post you would stop by this kopitiam to lend your support. The two ladies are doing this to just past time, not to earn a living. Who knows how long more they will be here. Remnants of a once popular Hainanese cuisine era. The post Covid effect still linger to this days. Sad to see Port Dickson is such a dead town despite its potential which I hope someday it gets revived again.

Nadi berdengup bertubi-tubi (Pulsating pulse)

Passed by this road many time and always wondered what food is available here given its heavy migrant populated area comprising of mostly of Indonesian, Bangladeshi and Pakistani. Parking here is rather challenging and was supposed to eat at another stall but ended up at this stall selling Minang food. Coming in, I was the only Chinese guy here in which from their facial expression, I guessed they must be wondering if this guy lost.

Looking at the dishes, food was almost half empty. So I got down to dish out some unique dishes like the โ€œgulai nangkaโ€, โ€œurat tunjangโ€ and โ€œsambal paruโ€. Overall, food is good, not spicy though I wished it was warm. Overall favourite is the sambal paru which was super crunchy despite it being cold. Drinks are served โ€œikat tepiโ€ and for the amount I had, found it to be quite reasonable. This area is a stark contrast to the highly dense Mont Kiara area. Hope to revisit this area and try the Nasi Padang down the road. I wonder if there is anymore hidden gems in this area to try out.

Shall We Beef?

It was raining so what better way than to have a nice piping hot bowl of beef noodle. Headed to having seen a Chinese speaking Reel recently. Upon entering, there are some elements of Hong Kong seen from the posters on the walls. Main kitchen was out at the front with a small display of Hong Kong goods. Ordered dishes namely ่ๅœๆธ…ๆฑค่…ฉ Brisket In Clear Broth and ๅฐ่ๅœไบ”็•ช็‰›ๆ‚๏ผˆ้‡‘้’ฑ่‚š๏ผŒๅคง่‚ ๏ผŒ็‰›ไธธ๏ผ‰Beef offal (Honeycomb,Big Intestine Beef Meatball) with separate plain noodles and Hong Kong Wanton Soup.

Noodles were thin and springy. Of the two beef pots, prefer the Brisket in Clear Broth which had a clean taste, something I would return back just for this. Found the stewed beef offal too gelatinous and โ€œjelakโ€ while the wanton wasnโ€™t worth the price point. Having seen the century egg on display, ordered a piece to try. Decent with gooey centre though there was a hint of ammonia from it. Overall, good beef noodle place which I found to better than its neighbour although both are of different cooking style.

More like feast like a butcher ๐Ÿ”ช

Visited thanks to . Canโ€™t recalled Iโ€™ve been here before though it felt familiar when I entered into the space. Canteen style dining area with benches which can be a challenge getting in and out. But your eyes will be fixed to the display area with a wide variety of meat options including lap cheong.

Sat and ate what was ordered. The tomahawk which require 30-45 mins to prepare was gorgeous. Nice pink with the right amount of fattiness, eaten alongside an avocado halve, coleslaw and sauerkraut which was the best side for me of the night. Rest of the items were decent. Limited drinks on offer with German beers on offer. Having said that, this place practice BYOB corkage free so we got bottles of wine sent over to help cut through the proteins.

More like a couple of concubines

Pre dinner drinks with cocktail fanboy (thanks for drinks) at . Located near to the touristy Kwan Chai Hong, this dim, brotel-like, Asian inspired cocktail bar is two storey and spot various spot to have a drink. Nice Asian inspired cocktails from its menu featuring its variety of signature cocktail. Tried one of its whisky based cocktail which is Banana Bread comprising of brown butter & banana washed monkey shoulder, earl grey & dried fruit syrup and px clarified. Nice balanced taste with a sweet note though it was a short sweet escape with 3-4 gulps. Prices are in its 50s which I feel on the higher side given its proximity to a touristy spot or maybe itโ€™s been sometime since I visited a cocktail bar.

Play big. Eat well. Win loud.

The simple rules at . Opener just 4 months ago, this first of its kind concept in Asia and South East Asia from the renown 90 years old British company and global leader in skill games, that marries both competition and culinary together. I had the privilege of planning a team dinner of 60+ pax here last week having scoured Klang Valley for suitable location that met the brief of a casual dining spot. And I thought letโ€™s add some fun to the equation. Exciting games, great food & drink and amazing view of KLCC. What more can you ask for?

This place is divided into two main areas, Carousel Bar that opens up to Balloon Terrace with the view of KLCC and Boardwalk with the expansive games centre comprising of 9 interactive carnival giant games with a leaderboard you can track using an app or available screens. Perfect place for team dinners, team building and parties. This is where you see how competitive people are. Not expecting much from an entertainment centre, I was surprised how good the food and drinks here. Whether you come in small groups for food or with games, there is reasonable F&B menu offerings including all night Happy Hour. For corporate events, they will curate a special menu for you and the food was a lot. Loved the steak here. Overall, very happy to have come across and I guarantee you will leave this place full of great memories. The service and customer experience here is immaculate. Look for Jin for corporate events whose extensive hospitality background is a big plus point and great to work with.

Canโ€™t deny their beef ribs were really โ€œlamโ€. Ooooo!

Joined a team dinner where a colleague recommended this South East Asian restaurant called . Heard about it and always thought it to be a fine dining place and never went. Rustic, cosy interior that reminds you about Bumbu Bali to a certain extent. Open kitchen where you see a majority foreigner staffed kitchen crew who deftly whipped up the dishes. You could tell from their movement they were an experienced bunch. Although I was seated closed to the kitchen, there was hardly any smell coming from it which goes to show they have a really good hood to suck it all out.

The team ordered a few dishes for sharing where I was particularly blown away by a number of the dishes starting with the famed ๐”๐ซ๐š๐ฉ ๐๐ฎ๐œ๐ฎ๐ค ๐๐š๐ค๐ฎ ๐ฐ๐ข๐ญ๐ก ๐๐ž๐ ๐š๐ ๐š which was aromatic but packed a punch from its spicy dressing. The ๐…๐ซ๐ข๐ž๐ ๐’๐ข๐ฅ๐ค๐ž๐ง ๐“๐จ๐Ÿ๐ฎ ๐ฐ๐ข๐ญ๐ก ๐„๐ ๐ ๐ฉ๐ฅ๐š๐ง๐ญ & ๐’๐จ๐ฒ was the lightest and cleanest dish in the menu and while everyone loved the eggplant, I was smitten by the silky smooth tofu instead. The ๐๐ž๐ž๐Ÿ ๐’๐ก๐จ๐ซ๐ญ ๐‘๐ข๐›๐ฌ ๐ฐ๐ข๐ญ๐ก ๐๐ž๐š๐ง๐ฎ๐ญ๐ฌ ๐š๐ง๐ ๐’๐œ๐š๐ฅ๐ฅ๐ข๐จ๐ง ๐Ž๐ข๐ฅ was simply divine and I couldnโ€™t help myself with multiple serving as the meat was moist, tender and the scallion oil complement the dish perfectly. Tried their two Tuak Cocktail, ๐’๐ž๐ง๐ฃ๐š and ๐„๐ฆ๐›๐ฎ๐ง with preferring the former. The desserts also two was decent with me preferring the ๐ซ๐ข๐ญ๐ญ๐ž๐ซ๐ฌ because of the jackfruit. Menu items are short here with strong flavour profile befitting the Malaysian palate and visitors alike.

Brimming with double joy, from the waistline. Thai-rific!

Seen this place a couple having visited the adjacent Flurre and was curious to try out this somewhat old establishment in the area. Upon arriving at Double Joy Thai House ๆ–ฐๅŒๅ–œ้ฅญๅŽ…, I was surprised to see an empty shop with both owners and workers sitting at the table waiting for customers. I was wondering if we made the wrong decision to come having seen previously a number of families entering the place. From the menu, it was majority Thai dishes with some familiar Chinese. Started off with Thai milk tea which was initially very sweet but the lady boss heard my muttering and helped make a new one that was less sweet. Ordered a number of dishes which were pretty big in portion. Best dish of the day has got to be the Thai Fried Kang Kung with an interesting spicy meat dip. Loved the Shrimp Fried Petai which had the right balance of spicy and savoury. The Thai Panang Curry was nice though I found the chicken chunky and dry. Sweet Sour Fish Rice was nice while the Ladna was decent. Overall, a good, hearty Thai Chinese restaurant. Hope to try the pork knuckle next time.

Thought Iโ€™ll become Wicked after having it

Been to before for desserts but this time Iโ€™m here for the real deal. A proper meal. Good variety with a number of offers and promotion. Though I was tempted with the value meal, I decided to go with their specialty and a unique dish. Tried their Signature Wagyu Rice Bowl with Black Truffle Sauce as well as added sides of Edamame with Salt and Tamago. Thinly sliced meat which I wished they given a few more slices. Loved their black truffle sauce that went well with the sides of fries. Couldnโ€™t help but try the Matcha Ramen with Chicken. It was for sure Chicken broth topped with Matcha powder which had a clean grassy taste to it which was akin to โ€œlei chaโ€. I really liked it. Topped with desserts of their soft and moist Omi Cake Roll and Premium Kyoto Matcha Ice Cream. Itโ€™s no wonder why a friend of mine comes here with his family almost every week because the kids love the food here.

In a cosy, chilled environment that would get local โ€œchap fanโ€ to pay attention

Met two years ago when I did a review at his previous venture, Carra Carra. Heโ€™s back at his first venture, Cafe Rocco by Chef Hon Sing re-pivoting over the last 2 years through food consultation, private chef gigs, catering and now value meals in the last 2 months to serve the community around the restaurant. And the community responded. As we arrived, drove of people started pouring. Multi generational from retirees to babies. It was a pleasant sight to see. And this is a common crowd you see during lunch everyday (Monday - Sunday) because of its affordable Everyday Lunch Set of RM9.90 that comes with Free Miso Soup and Iced Tea as they look to build up their dinner crowd through the recent Grilled Dinner Set from RM14.90 with Free Flow Garlic Bread.

Tried a number of items from the Everyday Lunch Set namely Lei Cha Pesto with Teriyaki Chicken, Smoked Duck Carbonara and Nasi Lemak Ayam Goreng. I really like Lei Cha Pesto as Chef leverages his Hakka heritage which I found really unique. And you can taste the similar Hakka influence with his Ayam Goreng from evident โ€œnam yuโ€ infusion. Tried the Mix Grill comprising of Chicken Sausage, Chicken Chop and Lamb Chop. Loved the Chicken Chop of the trio as it was well marinated, tasty and fresh. For drinks, we had the recommended Sparkling Mix Berries which was tangy and refreshing. Chef is also doing kids cooking classes and looking to launch a parent-kids with interactive cooking experiences as well as reviving his supper club back again. For events, he is even throwing in a free cake for certain spent amount. You can even en bloc the entire space for events that can sit 50-60 pax for min spend of RM1500. To thrive in this competitive industry, one has to continuous test, learn and evolve where I credit Chefโ€™s tenacity and passion. Good to have reconnected again and see you soon.
