Water leaves clues everywhere.

A muddy access road shows where drainage is failing. An abandoned rubber tapping cup becomes a breeding ground for insects. A reservoir creates habitat, stores water, and shapes the surrounding landscape.

This week’s issue looks at how standing water, wet ground, neighbouring land, fish, duckweed, and azolla all form part of the same farm ecology.

Good land management begins with observation.

A smelly chicken coop isn’t normal.

It’s usually a sign that the floor system needs attention—not that you need to clean more.

Learn why coops smell and how to prevent it in tropical conditions.

Backyard eggs sound simple — until the coop starts smelling, the floor stays wet, flies appear, rats come in, and egg production becomes inconsistent.

That is usually not a chicken problem.

It is a system problem.

Tropical Egg Engine is a visual PDF manual for keeping chickens in tropical conditions.

Built for small flocks in Malaysian weather, it covers dry litter, airflow, coop setup, feeding, routines, egg consistency, health, rats, predators, and more.

If you want to raise chickens with fewer mistakes and a cleaner setup, start here.

Most people think deep litter just means throwing bedding on the floor and leaving it there.

That is why their coop starts to smell.

In this blog post, I explain what beginners actually need to do to make deep litter work properly, including bedding depth, moisture, EM use, odour control, and when the litter is ready to move into compost.

If you want a chicken coop that is cleaner, more manageable, and more practical in Malaysian conditions, read this first.

We use the deep litter method for one main reason: a dry coop floor is easier to manage. When the floor stays dry, the coop is less likely to smell sharply, less likely to attract flies, and generally more stable over time. That is the real purpose of deep litter. It is not about ignoring manure, an...

Why does a chicken coop smell after rain? Simple: rain exposes a weak chicken coop system.

A smelly coop is usually not an “Ayam Issue.” It is a moisture issue.

When rainwater splashes in, birds track wet feet onto the litter, leaks drip into the coop, and humidity slows drying, the bedding turns wet, packed, and anaerobic. That is when the smell starts.

In tropical Malaysia, good chicken keeping is not just about having a pretty chicken coop. It is about dry litter, airflow, rain protection, and proper coop design. If your backyard chicken coop smells after rain, the answer is usually not perfume, disinfectant, or magic powder. The answer is to fix the moisture, restore airflow, and keep the litter alive.

No one wants a coop that smells like regret after one thunderstorm. 😅
Dryness first. Always.

Thinking of raising chickens? Read this first. 🐔✨

Most people think the first step is buying birds. It usually isn’t.

The biggest mistakes happen before the chickens arrive:

1. Buying birds before the coop and setup are ready
2. Choosing chickens for looks instead of purpose
3. Underestimating the daily routine of feeding, water, egg collection, cleaning, and protection

In tropical Malaysia, backyard chicken keeping is not just about having a cute coop or beautiful birds. A good chicken setup needs planning, airflow, dry ground, shade, routine, and the right breed for your goal.

If you want fresh eggs, healthy hens, and a cleaner, easier system, start with the setup first. Build with purpose. Choose with purpose. Manage with purpose. 🌿🥚

Cute chickens are nice.
Pretty coops are nice.
But a working system is nicer. 😉

Heritage Rhode Island Red hens in motion. Scratching, foraging, and working the ground the way a proper farm chicken should. At Grove Homestead, we appreciate Rhode Island Red heritage hens not only for their appearance, but for their role as a dependable dual-purpose breed suited for both egg production and practical farm life.

In a time when many people are looking into backyard chickens, heritage poultry, and more resilient food systems, breeds like the Rhode Island Red still matter. A good hen is not just red in colour. She should have strength, activity, foraging instinct, and the kind of presence that reflects function as much as form.

This is part of what we continue to observe and build here, chickens that fit into a real homestead, not just a photo.
