Fermented Cempedak Rind / Mandai
Growing up, my almarhumah Banjar grandmother Aminah was a legendary master weaver. When i was little, i used to sit for hours just watching her hands move. I would be task to mix and pound her betel nut in gobek as she worked on her latest design.
My late grandfather would bring home raw mengkuang leaves, and she would patiently soak, dry, dye, and weave them into beautiful, intricate mats. People traveled from far away just to buy her art.
Unfortunately none of her children inherit her craft. However she did passed down a recipe to my mom: making Mandai.
To be honest? I hated it as a kid. It was too sour, too salty, and I just didn’t get it. But grief and memory work in mysterious ways. Lately, I’ve been deeply longing for the sights and smells of my childhood kitchen.
While researching food for guts, I’ve realized Mandai is actually a healthy superfood!
💥 This recipe is Lacto Ferment. Natural wild fermentation packs this with gut-loving probiotics.
How to make Mandai :
- Prep: Cut off the outer thorny green skin of the cempedak. Keep the thick white inner rind.
- Brine: Wash with salt to rid of sticky sap, cut into chunks, rub generously with coarse salt.
- Jar: Put the rinds in clean jar, pour warm water and submerge in clean water.
- Ferment: Seal tightly in a jar for 2 to 3 days until sour and tangy.
NEXT ….. Cooking video is coming up how to cook this healthy vegan friendly food.

Angus Ribeye With Salad
Our lunch last week and soon to be repeated. It was delicious snd easy to prepare!. The crunchy salad is scrumptious, i drizzle bit of olive oil and tossed it with the salad seasoning bought from Istanbul. The sweet onion, tomato and cucumber really elevates it and made a perfect sides for the Angus Ribeye Steak.
My joy in cooking is about using fresh ingredients and having the right instrument making it.
🥩 The Angus Ribeye is from Pok Brothers
🍳Pan is from The Original GreenPan Malaysia

My hooman isn’t feeling 100%, so I’m officially on clock for full-time cat-therapy duty.
🩺📦 Up next: an all-night anime movie marathon.
Just a reminder of my daily shift responsibilities:
👤 Being your literal shadow
🚨 Staying on high alert for dangerous ghosts
🛋️ Providing elite companionship
💼 Functioning as your chief work advisor
🎁 Bringing home the occasional (and highly questioned) gift
Healing is hard work, but someone’s gotta supervise.

An Afternoon & Evening at Sushi Foo 🍣🤍
When a friend is sad and has lost her appetite, take her somewhere quiet, calming and delicious. Sometimes good food and good company are all we need.
She and i had such a lovely lunch at Sushi Foo 鮨ふう that i came back for dinner the following day with my husband & friends. We ordered few dishes to share. The chef took time to explain each dishes to us and the ingredients used in the meal. He let me smell Yuzu lime, it was fragrant and fresh aroma.
We enjoyed the Sashimi with Fresh Oyster, Prawn Tempura, Fried Oyster & Soft Boiled Egg, 6pc Sushi with Hot Mini Sanuki Noodle, and the Kaze Omakase — Chawan Mushi, 5 kinds of Tsumami, 8pc Sushi, Tomago Sushi, Soup and Yuzu Sorbet with Fruits.
Fresh food, thoughtful dishes and a little time together. A lovely evening indeed. 🥢✨
Love always,
K Lina

Walking, Eating & Finding Balance
Travelling for us is all about walking, eating, and experiencing the local cuisine.
This trip started off in Edinburgh, then Newcastle for daughter’s graduation and ended in Istanbul.
Most days, we clocked in plenty of steps exploring the streets, markets, and gardens.
I never expect to lose weight on holiday because, truthfully, we’re also eating far more than we usually do.
I came home weighing the same as when I left. That’s balance, moving more, eating well, making memories, and enjoying every bite.
I am happy to be home. Bought spices, sweet treats for family. I am inspired by the meals and new flavours i discovered, definitely will try cooking some at home.
Some tips in istanbul :
- Hafız Mustafa 1864 - for tea & dessert
- Tarihi Sultanahmet Köftecisi for kofta & lamb (they hv many branches)
- Any Lokantasi for rice with dishes
- Grilled fish & seafood and items at Kodikoy Carsi
- I buy spices, soap and gifts from shops outside of Grand Bazaar, its cheaper and more variety
- Ziyafet kuzu çevirme for roast lamb

Love always,

Malay & Indonesian Food
Last month we visited few restaurants, and each one had its own unique identity and flavours worth sharing. Below are my reviews :
🌿 Rembayung famous menu serves Malay cuisine with East Coast influences. 👍The dishes that stood out for us were the Cucur Udang, Buah Asam Boi, Sayur Masak Lemak and Fish Kari. 👎 Somehow the Sambal Fish was very spicy even for our asian palate. Nonetheless, the food were beautifully presented, comforting and perfect with warm rice.
🐟 Restoran Dulang Tok Wan (Eco Majestic) celebrates Perak cuisine, and tastes like home cooked food. 👍We especially loved the crispy Ikan Loma with sambal tempoyak, ikan loma pekasam, Kari ikan utara, and the creamy Udang Masak Lemak. 👎My only complain is that its in Semenyih ! 😅
💚 The Lemuni never disappoints. 👍I love its gorgeous modern kampung ambience, welcoming, and relaxing. Our favourites were the Lepat Pisang, Daging Salai Masak Lemak, Daging Masak Hitam. Ayam Sambal, Ulam-Ulaman, Kerabu Peria and Sambal Mangga, a combination that celebrates diversity of Malaysian flavours. For dessert we had Tapai Pulut & Durian. 👎The Ikan Patin is ok, but coming from Temerluh i tasted better ones.
The Betawi impressed us with its beautiful décor and authentic Indonesian flavours. 👍 We enjoyed the Nasi Iga Bakar, Sup Ekor, Ayam Sambal, refreshing Es Teler, and perfect meal ending with crispy fried bananas served with ice cream. 👎 Maybe its just me but i do not like the Tahu Telur here. The sauce is too sweet.
Every restaurant tells a different story through its food. Different regions, different traditions, yet all connected by generous hospitality and recipes passed down through generations.
My favourite passtime, eating together, creating memories with family and friends, one delicious meal at a time.
Which Malay or Indonesian restaurant should I add to my list next? Share your favourite local food hunt ❤️

Istanbul, July 2026
Slow down. Breathe. Look around. 🇹🇷
I’m a slow traveller. I prefer to immerse in the vibe and linger, and this beautiful country is the perfect place to do exactly that.
Some highlights from the reel:
🍳 The Ultimate Turkish Breakfast: Starting mornings with a massive kahvaltı spread.
🕌 Sultan Ahmet Mosque: absorbing the breathtaking beauty and peaceful energy of the Blue Mosque.
🍵 Sweet Afternoons: Sitting back at the Hafız Mustafa shops, sipping hot Turkish tea, and sampling the most delicate Turkish delight.
🐟 Seafood Feasts: Ending the day eating fresh, perfectly grilled seafood, fried sardines or horse mackerel and delicious turkish meatballs.
🚢 The Bosphorus Crossing: Catching the local commuter ferry to the Asian side.
🛍️ Kadıköy Street Market: Getting lost in the colorful market lanes, wandering into neighborhood deli meat shops to sample dried cured meats, and cheeses.
Next hammam, Topkapi Palace, Basilica Cistern and more bazaars 😂.
Slow travel taught me that the best flavor of a country isn’t found on a checklist. It’s found when you take the time to truly taste it. 🌊💙
