Shuijingfang Museum Visit - A Living Legacy of Chinese Baijiu

The Shuijingfang Museum stands as one of the most remarkable heritage sites dedicated to traditional Chinese spirits. Discovered and restored in 1998, it is widely recognized as the oldest continuously operating distillery site in the world.

Located in the heart of Chengdu, the Shuijingfang distillery site has been designated as a National Intangible Cultural Heritage, reflecting its immense historical and cultural significance. It offers visitors a rare opportunity to explore the origins and evolution of baijiu, China’s iconic distilled spirit.

Spanning approximately 2,000 square meters, the site follows the traditional layout of “store in the front, distillery in the rear.” It is also the first ancient spirit-brewing workshop in China to have been scientifically excavated, and it remains the most completely preserved site of its kind, with fully intact production facilities.

The museum showcases:

Ancient distillation workshops and traditional brewing equipment
A rich collection of historical artifacts and cultural relics
Detailed insights into Sichuan’s long-standing winemaking (baijiu-making) heritage

What makes Shuijingfang truly unique is that it is not just a museum, but a “living” distillery. We witness the ongoing production of Shui Jing Fang liquor, still crafted using traditional techniques passed down over more than 600 years. This immersive experience provides a rare glimpse into the continuity of craftsmanship that bridges past and present.

Overall, the Shuijingfang Museum was an exceptional journey into the history, culture, and artistry of Chinese baijiu, making it a must-visit destination for anyone interested in spirits and heritage.
