Yesterday we spent the entire day tracking livestock thieves who had stolen and slaughtered our neighbour’s goats. Then, just hours later, we found one of our own calves butchered in the night.

This is the reality of farming in Africa. It’s tough, it’s heartbreaking — but we keep going.

🐔🌱 Chicken Compost Factory Loading…
We’re in the early stages of building our chicken-powered compost factory, inspired by permaculture principles! The goal? Turn manure, food scraps, and organic matter into rich, living compost — with our hardworking chickens doing the turning and fertilizing.
Stay tuned as this regenerative system comes to life. 👣♻️

The secret to healthy pastures? Timing your grazing! When grass is kept in its vegetative state — young, leafy, and green — it’s at its most nutritious, high in energy, protein, and digestibility. Once it starts to set seed, the plant shifts focus from growth to reproduction, and the feed quality drops.

Here we can clearly see the difference in this fence line photo. On the left there are very few cattle that are in that camp graze for a long time. On the right our cattle are in one large herd and only graze for a few days then are moved to the next camp.

Nature’s Comeback! 🌿✨

These two photos were taken just 4 months apart on the same piece of land. After enduring the hard drought of 2024, the land was left dry and bare. But with 400mm of rain, the grasses have made an incredible return! 🌾💚

This is a powerful reminder of how resilient nature can be when given the chance. Proper grazing management and patience are key to keeping this recovery sustainable.

🌧️ Rain, rain, and more rain! 🌧️

Last week we had 122mm!! 🎉🎉 And another 42mm so far this week. We’re well on our way to reaching our 500mm annual average!

But what’s even cooler? Crystal-clear runoff from our veld and earthworms thriving in the soil! 🪱🌿 Proof that our land is soaking up the rain just as it should. 🌍💚

So far we’ve had 375mm of rain and the cattle are starting to look good again. Calves are growing really well.
