🐔 HOW'S MANY BROILER CYCLES SHOULD YOU RUN IN A YEAR?
The number of times you stock your pen is not the most important thing. Proper farm management and biosecurity should come first.
1) DON'T RUSH INTO ANOTHER BATCH.
After selling your birds, don't immediately bring in new chicks.
First:
▪️Remove the old litter.
▪️Wash the poultry house properly.
▪️Clean feeders and drinkers.
▪️Disinfect the house and equipment.
▪️Allow everything to dry properly.
▪️Provide good ventilation and sunlight.
▪️Give the pen enough time to rest.
2) AVOID MIXING BIRDS OF DIFFERENT AGES.
Don't keep:
❌ 1-week-old birds with 3-week-old birds
❌ 3-week-old birds with 5-week-old birds
Older birds can carry infections that may affect younger birds.
Use the all-in, all-out system:
Bring them in together → Raise them together → Sell them together → Empty the pen → Clean and disinfect → Rest → Bring in the next batch.
3) GIVE THE PEN A RESTING PERIOD
If your broilers are kept for about 6 weeks, giving the pen about 2 weeks for cleaning, drying, disinfection and rest gives you an 8-week production cycle.
52 weeks ÷ 8 weeks = about 6.5 cycles per year.
So, around 6 complete cycles per year is a reasonable target under this management system. Some farms may achieve 7 depending on their production period and management.
4) MORE CYCLES DON'T ALWAYS MEAN MORE PROFIT.
Trying to force 10 or 12 batches through one pen may increase your production on paper, but it can also increase:
▪️Disease problems
▪️Mortality
▪️Medication costs
▪️Poor growth
▪️Uneven birds
▪️Feed wastage
▪️Overall losses
More batches do not automatically mean more money.
5) WANT CONTINUOUS PRODUCTION? Use more than one pen
Instead of overusing one pen, rotate your houses.
For example:
🐓 Pen A: 5-week-old birds
🐓 Pen B: 2-week-old birds
🧹 Pen C: Empty, being cleaned and rested
This allows you to keep producing while giving each pen enough time for proper cleaning and preparation.
⭐ The main lesson is that;
Don't ask only, "How many times can I stock my pen?"
Ask:
"How many healthy and profitable batches can I produce without compromising my farm?"
Take care of your poultry house, maintain good biosecurity, avoid mixing ages, and give your pens time to recover.
In poultry farming, consistency is better than rushing for more cycles.
