Why Most Fish Farmers Stay Broke… I Wish Someone Told Me This Earlier

I remember one afternoon that changed how I see fish farming forever.
I was sitting with 3 fish farmers.
All of them had ponds.
All of them had fish.
But none of them had money.
One complained
“Feed is too expensive”

Pond Setup
STEP 1: SECURE THE HABITAT
Body: Your fish need a home before they need food.
Location: Ensure proximity to a clean, reliable water source (borehole or river).
Pond Type:
Earthen Ponds: Best for near-river locations; cheaper to feed.
Concrete/Tarpaulin: Best for urban areas and easy management.
Drainage: Ensure your outlet pipe allows water to flow out easily by gravity.
Pro Tip: Treat your pond with lime before stocking to kill bacteria.

Fingerlings
STEP 2: GETTING THE SEED
Body: Your harvest depends entirely on the quality of your seed.
Species: Catfish (Clarias) is the most rugged and profitable in Nigeria. Tilapia is great but requires more oxygen.
Source: Buy from a reputable hatchery. Avoid "runts" (stunted fish).
Stocking: Don't overcrowd.
Standard: 1 fish per 10-15 liters of water.
Warning: Poor fingerlings = Poor harvest, no matter how much you feed them.

Feeding
STEP 3: FEEDING FOR GROWTH
Body: Feed takes up 70% of your production cost. Manage it wisely.
Feed Sizes: Start small (2mm) and increase size (4mm, 6mm, 9mm) as fish grow.
Type: Use floating feed initially to monitor appetite.
Schedule: Feed twice daily (morning and evening).
Sorting: Sort fish by size every 3-4 weeks to prevent the big ones from eating the small ones (Cannibalism).

Harvest
STEP 4: CASHING OUT
Body:
Timeline: Catfish usually reach market size (1kg+) in 4 to 6 months.
Processing: You can sell fresh to market women/hotels OR smoke/dry them to export or sell at a premium.
The Melange Market: You can also sell after 3 months (Melange size) to other farmers if you want a quicker turnover.
