Every tomato season, thousands of tonnes of tomatoes are lost after harvest due to poor preservation and limited processing capacity. Farmers lose income, consumers face price fluctuations, and food goes to waste.

LATE BLIGHT DISEASE IN TOMATOES

Don't Ignore the Early Signs

The symptoms shown in this tomato plant are typical of Late Blight disease (Phytophthora infestans), one of the most destructive diseases in tomato production.

It often appears as dark brown to black spots on leaves, stems, and fruits, spreading rapidly during cool, humid, or rainy conditions. If not controlled early, it can significantly reduce yield and even destroy an entire field.

Farmers should promptly remove heavily infected plant parts, improve field sanitation, and begin a preventive fungicide program. Fungicides containing active ingredients such as Metalaxyl-M + Mancozeb (e.g., Ridomil Gold) are effective in managing Late Blight when applied according to label recommendations. Early detection and timely intervention remain the best defense against this costly disease.
