🚨 WHEN A PATIENT RELATIVE CHALLENGES A NURSE: WHO IS RIGHT?

“Nurse, you are not doing your job properly! I brought my father here for treatment, not excuses. If anything happens to him, you will answer for it. Don’t tell me what to do—I know my rights!”

The nurse, frustrated by the confrontation, responds aggressively.

But here is the real question:

👉 Does knowing your rights as a patient relative give you the right to disrespect a healthcare professional?

And on the other hand:

👉 Does a nurse’s frustration justify responding aggressively or unprofessionally?

Healthcare is built on respect, communication, teamwork and patient safety. A difficult relative may be angry because they are worried about their loved one—but healthcare professionals are also expected to remain professional, even under pressure.

HER EXCELLENCY, MRS. VICTORIA HANSATU GOWON

Born 22 August 1946 | Celebrating 80 Years

Today, The Caring Classroom proudly celebrates the remarkable life of Her Excellency, Mrs. Victoria Hansatu Gowon—a distinguished Nigerian nurse, former First Lady of Nigeria, woman of dignity, compassion and enduring service.

Born on 22 August 1946, Victoria Hansatu Zakari was raised with values of humility, discipline, service and respect for others. Her passion for healthcare led her to the School of Nursing at University College Hospital, Ibadan, where she qualified as a State Registered Nurse in July 1968.

In 1969, she married General Yakubu Gowon, who was then Nigeria's Head of State, and served as First Lady from 1969 to 1975. She entered public life at a remarkably young age, yet carried her responsibilities with the quiet dignity, discipline and compassion associated with her nursing background. The National Library of Nigeria records her as a Nigerian nurse and the third First Lady of Nigeria.

Her legacy is particularly meaningful to the nursing and healthcare community. On 12 May 1973, Mrs. Gowon officially opened the School of Nursing at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital, which began with an initial intake of 22 students. That institution has grown into the present College of Nursing Sciences, continuing to prepare generations of nurses and nurse leaders.

Historical accounts also credit Mrs. Gowon with advocating for the welfare and improved status of nurses during the Gowon administration, reflecting her personal connection to the profession and her concern for those who dedicated their lives to caring for others.

At 80, her story is more than a celebration of longevity. It is a celebration of a life connected to service, nursing, family, national responsibility and compassion.

Her journey reminds us that the nursing profession is not merely a career—it is a calling to serve humanity with competence, courage, empathy and dignity.
