I have come to the conclusion that large broiler farming is not feasible and sustainable in Nigeria, unless you have other ventures, like layers farming or hatchery, sustaining you.

The broiler chicken market is unreliable, credit is not readily available and when it is, is very expensive. One credit sale that goes bad can wipe you out. You can lose all your chicken due to power failure. All these in addition to the normal risks you face in raising broilers, including poor quality day old chicks and diseases.

As a result, I have developed two rules for successful broiler farming:

1. Make layer farming your main business for daily sustainable.

2. Never raise more broilers than you can process and put in your freezer or coldroom if the market is bad.

Good evening great farmers.

It pains me so much when I see farmers suffering losses due to ignorance and carelessness.

For the second time in two weeks, I went to a farm that had birds suffering from gumboro. The problem with the two farms were identical. Both had owners who hired unqualified workers who only knew how to put feed and water and nothing else. Both owners had no idea what these workers were doing with vaccination vaccination. They had no idea when the vaccination was given, how much water was used. Each case resulted in gumboro.

Every farmer must understand the basic fundamentals of the business. Ignorance is not an excuse.

Get very good training.

ON MY MIND TODAY APRIL 30, 2025.
I have never figured out why anyone will be raising more than 100 broilers without bell drinkers or ni**le drinkers. Is it because as Africans we like suffering? Does suffering excite us? Is it ignorance? Help me out with your comments.

THE NEED TO SORT YOUR BROILERS TO ENSURE EVEN GROWTH.

There are six things you need to have even growth in your broilers.

1. Good DOC [Day Old Chicks].
2. Good management practices.
3. Healthy birds.
4. Good feed.
5. Adequate feeders (1 feeder for every 15 birds in week 1 to 4, then 1 feeder for every 10 birds from week 4).
6. Sorting. You also have to sort, preferable from two weeks. By week 5, they will be even growth. If you don't sort, even if you have enough feeders, you will have uneven growth because of the dynamics of pecking order, the smaller ones will always not eat when a bigger chicken is around. So, separating them removes the fear and allows them to eat well instead of eating crumps.

In broiler production, the most important thing in brooding is giving your birds appropriate heating and ventilation. It's more important than the feed you give.

The best way to make sure you are giving them appropriate heating and ventilation is to use temperature guage.

Maintain the following temperatures:

First week- days 1 to 4: 30 to 33C
First week- days 5 to 7: 28 to 30C
Second week: 27 to 30C
Third week: 25 to 27C
Fourth week: 21 to 24C
Fifth week: 21
Sixth week: 19C

Appropriate heating and ventilation will affect their weight, mortality, "pasty butt" and overall health.
