If I had ₦50k to start a farm today, here’s what I’d plant

1. Plantain
Why: It takes 10-12 months to harvest. Sells year-round. High demand in markets and restaurants.

What I’d do: Buy 100 suckers. Plant at 2m x 2m spacing on 1/8 acre.

Return: One mature bunch sells for ₦1,500-₦3,000. Even with 70% survival, that’s ₦105k-₦210k in year 1.

2. Cassava
Why: Low maintenance, drought-tolerant, food security + cash crop.

What I’d do: Buy stems for 1/8 acre. Intercrop between plantain rows to maximize space.

Return: Harvest at 10-12 months. Sell fresh or process to garri for higher profit.

The strategy:
Interplant so every square meter works. Plantain gives shade and early income. Cassava fills the gaps.

This is how small farmers actually scale up. Start small, get it right, reinvest profits.

Why Your Cassava is “Lazy”?!
It’s not the plant. It’s the soil.

Walk into two farms with the same cassava variety, and one will give you tubers the size of your arm while the other gives you skinny sticks. Same seed, different results.

1. Soil: Too much nitrogen = all leaves, no tubers. Your plant looks bushy and happy, but underground it’s slacking. Cassava wants balanced soil with good potassium and phosphorus to push energy into the roots.

2. Timing: Plant at the start of the rain season, harvest at 10-12 months for most varieties. Leave it in the ground for 18+ months and the tubers get woody and low in starch. It’s like overcooking rice.

3. Spacing: Plant too close and they shade each other. You get tall stems and small tubers. The sweet spot for most varieties is 1m x 1m. Gives each plant room to breathe and bulk up.

📌Test your soil before planting. If you can’t test, observe. If the soil is hard, waterlogged, or full of rocks, cassava will struggle no matter how good your cutting is. Loose, well-drained soil = happy tubers.
