Happy New Year, once again๐ŸŽ‰โœจ

As the year begins, it feels right to pause and reflect on the journey so far and the systems being built on the farm ( - TSFs). A new year brings fresh energy, clearer focus, and renewed commitment to doing things intentionally and sustainably.

Raising catfish with Black Soldier Fly (BSF) as a main part of their feed has been a deliberate choice, and this choice is not just for growth only, but for sustainability and fish health.

BSF helps convert organic waste into high-quality protein, and in turn supports stronger, healthier fish with good flesh quality. Watching the fish grow well and naturally has been a rewarding experience.

After harvest, part of the produce is smoked catfish, a method that has stood the test of time. Smoked catfish is not just about flavour, itโ€™s also about preservation. Proper smoking reduces moisture content, which helps slow down spoilage and allows the fish to last longer without chemical preservatives. The smoking process also enhances taste, aroma, and texture, making it a staple in many homes and traditional dishes.
Have you tasted the smoked version? I bet you'll take a break off fresh catfish for the main time ๐Ÿคช

Beyond preservation, smoked catfish remains a rich source of protein, healthy fats, calcium, and essential minerals. You know, water is reduced during smoking, the nutrients then become more concentrated, making small portions very nourishing. When done hygienically, smoked fish retains its nutritional value while offering convenience and versatility in cooking.

Alongside fish production, the farm continues to run as an integrated system โ€” BSF production, poultry, and vegetable farming all working together. Each unit supports the other, helping reduce waste, manage costs, and promote sustainable food production.
Still learning, still refining processes, and grateful for every stage of growth. Cheers to consistency, progress, and meaningful harvests in the year ahead ๐ŸŒฑ

N:B - Catfish, noiilers and local chicks are still very much available for sale.

Crop pests are farmersโ€™ enemies, and household farmer are not exempted from this. The above pest is one of the most common and destructive tomato pest, called Army worm (Spodoptera spp). Here are some seven (7) vital points you should know about this pest before venturing into tomato ๐Ÿ… ๐Ÿ… ๐Ÿ…cultivation โ€ฆ๐Ÿ‘‡๐Ÿ‘‡๐Ÿ‘‡

1. What are armyworms? Armyworms are caterpillars, the larvae of moths in the genus Spodoptera.
2. Diet: Armyworms are polyphagous, meaning they feed on many different plants, including crops like tomatoes, corn, and cotton.
3. Damage: Armyworms can cause significant damage to plants by eating leaves, stems, and fruit.
4. Life cycle: Armyworms go through four stages: egg, larva (caterpillar), pupa, and adult moth.
5. Migration: Some armyworm species are migratory, meaning they can travel long distances, potentially spreading damage to crops.
6. Outbreaks: Armyworms can occur in large numbers, leading to significant economic losses for farmers.
7. Control methods: Management strategies include biological control (e.g., natural predators), cultural control (e.g., crop rotation), and chemical control (e.g., insecticides). The Seal Farms -TSFs

Itโ€™s Catfish Oโ€™Clock! ๐ŸŽฏ๐ŸŽฏ๐ŸŽฏ

If you are using tarpaulin or tank ponds, water quality is not just important โ€“ itโ€™s everything. Unlike earthen ponds, these setups do not have natural filtration, so the health of your catfish is directly tied to how well you manage that water.

Here are some practical tips to keep your pond water healthy:

โœ… Watch the Water Color:
In tarpaulin ponds, water can change color quickly. Ideal is light green. If it turns dark, milky, or smells foul, it is time for a water change.

โœ… Do Partial Water Changes Regularly:
In a closed system, waste builds up fast. Change 10โ€“30% of your water every 3โ€“5 days to reduce ammonia and maintain oxygen levels.

โœ… Avoid Overfeeding:
Excess feed = excess waste. Feed what your fish can finish in 5โ€“10 minutes, and remove any leftovers immediately to avoid contamination.

โœ… Aeration is a Lifesaver:
No soil means no natural oxygen flow. Use air pumps or splash techniques to keep the oxygen levels up, especially in the early morning.

โœ… De-Sludge Weekly:
Even in tanks and tarpaulins, waste settles at the bottom. Use a siphon or pond vacuum to remove sludge weekly and prevent toxic buildup.

โœ… Mind the Temperature:
For faster growth, maintain water temperature around 27โ€“30ยฐC. Use shades or covers to help regulate temp in extreme weather.

๐Ÿงผ Clean, Healthy Water = Big, Active Fish:
Your pond might be artificial, but your results do not have to be. With the right care, tarpaulin and tank ponds can produce strong, healthy, profitable catfish.

*Turning Waste into Organic Fertilizer: The Power of BSF Frass ๐ŸŒฟ*

Happy New Week, famz ๐ŸŒน๐ŸŒน๐ŸŒน

Did you know that the Black Soldier Fly (BSF) farming is not only for producing nutrient-rich larvae for animal and fish feed, but also have another valuable by-product?
The BSF frass is another valuable product many people overlook.

*What Exactly is BSF Frass?*
Frass is the organic material left behind after BSF larvae feed on waste. Itโ€™s a mix of their droppings, shed skins, and leftover bits of organic matter. While it might look like ordinary dirt, BSF frass is actually a natural fertilizer packed with nutrients that facilitate plantsโ€™ growth.

*How is it Produced?*
As the larvae consume food scrapsโ€”such as fruit peels, kitchen waste, or farm leftoversโ€”they break it down efficiently. Over 10โ€“14 days, they convert this waste into two valuable outputs:
โœ… Protein-rich larvae for animal feed
โœ… Frass for soil enrichment

The frass settles at the bottom of your BSF container and can be collected, dried, and stored for use.

*Why Use BSF Frass?*
๐ŸŒฑ High in essential nutrients like nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium (NPK)
๐ŸŒฑ Improves soil structure and moisture retention
๐ŸŒฑ Boosts plant growth naturally
๐ŸŒฑ Safe, sustainable, and 100% organic
๐ŸŒฑ Reduces dependence on chemical fertilizers

*How to Use It:*
Apply frass directly to your soil, mix it into compost, or use it in planting beds or sack gardens. Aside using it for other arable crops,it is especially effective for vegetables.

N:Bโ€“ Always dry your frass properly before storing to avoid mold or odor.

Do you know that BSF eggs typically hatch into neonates within 4-24 hours after being laid, and this can continue into the next 4-5days?

If eggs start hatching on the first day, you can expect:

- Most eggs to hatch within 24 hours: With peak hatching usually occurring within 4-6 hours.
- Variation in hatching time: Depending on factors like temperature, humidity, and egg quality.

Keep in mind that optimal conditions can influence hatching time and success rates.
