Standing heat is the period during a sow’s or gilt’s estrus cycle when she is most receptive to the boar and will stand still to be mounted, crossed, or mated.

🔹 How to Recognise Standing Heat

1. When pressure is applied to her back (by a boar or even by a farmer’s hand), she stands firmly, ears pricked, and doesn’t move away.

🔹 Timing in Estrus Cycle

Estrus in sows lasts 2–3 days.

Standing heat occurs midway, usually 24–48 hours after the onset of heat.

This is the optimum time for mating or AI.

Ovulation occurs towards the end of the standing heat, which is why proper timing is crucial.

🔹 Importance in Pig Production

Mating during standing heat leads to higher conception rates and larger litter sizes.

Missing standing heat often results in repeat breeding and wasted feed and management costs.

✅ In short: Standing heat is the period when a sow stands still to be mounted.

🚫After mating, remove her from the boar and return her after 6 hours to be mounted again and remove her.
