DEEP LITTER SYSTEM VS CAGE SYSTEM π
If you are planning to start or expand a poultry farm, one important decision you will have to make is which housing system is best for your birds: Deep Litter or Cage System?
The truth is, both systems can work well when properly designed and managed. The better choice depends on your farm size, available space, management style, budget, and production goals.
π 1. DEEP LITTER SYSTEM
In the deep litter system, birds are kept together on the floor of the poultry house. Materials such as wood shavings, rice husks, or other suitable litter materials are spread on the floor.
Advantages
β
Lower initial investment in housing equipment
β
Birds have more freedom to move around
β
Easy to start on a small scale
β
Suitable for farmers who prefer floor-based management
β
Litter can eventually be processed and used as manure
Challenges
β οΈ Requires good litter management
β οΈ More floor space is needed per bird
β οΈ Poor ventilation or wet litter can create serious management problems
β οΈ Eggs may become dirty or damaged if nest management is poor
β οΈ Disease and parasite control require close attention
β οΈ Collecting manure can be more labour-intensive
---
π’ 2. CAGE SYSTEM
In the cage system, birds are housed in specially designed compartments, usually arranged in tiers. Feeders and ni**le drinkers can be integrated into the system, while eggs roll onto an accessible collection area.
Advantages
β
Makes better use of available space
β
Allows higher stocking capacity in a properly designed house
β
Easier egg collection
β
Eggs are generally kept away from the litter and manure
β
Feed and water can be managed more efficiently
β
Manure can be separated from the birds depending on the cage design
β
Makes monitoring individual birds easier
β
Particularly suitable for commercial layer operations
Challenges
β οΈ Higher initial investment
β οΈ Requires good-quality cages and proper installation
β οΈ Farmers need to understand cage management
β οΈ Poor cage design or overcrowding can affect bird welfare and productivity

βοΈ DEEP LITTER VS CAGE SYSTEM
Factor| Deep Litter| Cage System
Initial investment| Generally lower| Generally higher
Space efficiency| Lower| Higher
Egg collection| More labour| Easier
Litter management| Required| Greatly reduced/avoided within cages
Feed management| Can be less controlled| More controlled
Commercial scale| Possible| Very suitable
Manure handling| Litter-based| Can be separated/managed differently
Management| Requires good floor management| Requires proper cage management
π‘ SO, WHICH ONE SHOULD YOU CHOOSE?
There is no single answer for every farmer.
If you are starting small and have enough space, deep litter may be a practical option.
If your goal is to operate a larger commercial layer farm and maximize the efficient use of available space, a well-designed cage system may be more suitable.
But remember:
A good cage does not automatically make a farm profitable.
You still need:
π Good-quality birds
πΎ Quality feed
π§ Clean and adequate water
π Proper vaccination and disease prevention
π¬οΈ Good ventilation
π§Ή Proper hygiene
π Good farm records
π¨βπΎ Proper daily management
π― MY ADVICE TO FARMERS
Don't choose a housing system simply because another farmer is using it.
Calculate first.
Consider your available land, number of birds, construction cost, equipment cost, labour, feed management, expected egg production, market, and long-term expansion plans.
The best poultry system is the one that matches your farm size, budget, management capacity, and production goals.
Invest wisely. Plan before you build. Your housing system is one of the foundations of your poultry business. ππ
