Caring for day-old chickens requires attention to their environment, nutrition, and health.
Here are the steps to follow:
*Day 1: Arrival and Setup*
- Unbox the chicks quickly, count them, and dip each beak into water to encourage drinking.
- Check for deformed chicks, unhealed navels, and underweight chicks, and separate them for special care.
- Vaccinate against Newcastle and Marek's diseases if not done at the hatchery.
- Provide a warm, draft-free brooder with a temperature of 90-95°F (32-35°C)
*Brooder Setup and Maintenance*
- Use a secure, well-ventilated brooder with pine shavings or chopped straw as bedding.
- Keep the brooder clean, replacing bedding frequently, and clean feeders and drinkers daily.
- Ensure proper airflow without exposing chicks to direct drafts
*Feeding and Hydration*
- Provide chick starter feed and fresh water at all times.
- Dip chicks' beaks in water to teach them how to drink.
- Use a shallow waterer to prevent drowning
*Health and Monitoring*
- Monitor chicks for signs of disease, such as lethargy, diarrhea, or respiratory issues.
- Isolate and treat sick birds promptly.
- Check for pasty butt and splayed legs, and treat accordingly
*Additional Tips*
- Handle chicks gently to avoid injury.
- Keep the brooder area clean and disinfected to prevent disease.
- Gradually decrease the brooder temperature by 5°F (3°C) each week until they are fully feathered
