Proposed Review of WAEC, NECO Registration Fees Suspended; Stakeholder Consultations to Continue

The federal government has suspended the proposed review of registration fees for the 2027 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) and the National Examinations Council (NECO) Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE) to allow for broader consultations with stakeholders.

A press release issued by the Federal Ministry of Education announced that the letter conveying the proposed fee adjustment has been withdrawn to enable a comprehensive review and wider consultations before a final decision is reached.

The decision followed concerns and constructive feedback from members of the public, particularly on issues related to access to quality education.

The Ministry explained that the proposed fee review was informed by prevailing economic realities and the rising cost of conducting credible national examinations.

According to the Ministry, the examination registration fees have remained largely unchanged for several years despite significant increases in operational expenses, including logistics, security, printing of examination materials, technology deployment, quality assurance and other essential services required to maintain the integrity and credibility of public examinations nationwide.

However, the Minister of Education, Dr Maruf Tunji Alausa, directed that the proposal be placed on hold in line with the Federal Government's commitment to inclusive, transparent and evidence-based policymaking.

The suspension of the review underscores its determination to ensure that policies affecting millions of Nigerian students and their families are carefully considered, socially responsive and reflective of the collective interest of the nation.

As part of the fresh review process, the Ministry will engage extensively with examination bodies, state ministries of education, school proprietors and administrators, parents' associations, organised labour, education stakeholders and other critical partners to ensure that any future decision is fair, sustainable, transparent and responsive to prevailing realities while safeguarding access to education.

Additionally, the proposed increase in examination registration fees will not take effect as previously communicated until the consultation process is completed.

It assured Nigerians that the public would be kept fully informed throughout the consultation process.

NIGERIA LAUNCHES FREETV: A NEW ERA OF SUBSCRIPTION-FREE DIGITAL BROADCASTING

The Federal Government of Nigeria officially unveiled FreeTV on June 17, 2026, as a key milestone in the country’s long-delayed Digital Switch-Over (DSO) programme.

Implemented by the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) in partnership with the Nigerian Communications Satellite (NIGCOMSAT), the platform delivers over 100 free-to-air channels nationwide without monthly subscription fees. Launched at NIGCOMSAT headquarters in Abuja by the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, FreeTV forms part of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda. It aims to expand digital inclusion, boost local content, and complete Nigeria’s transition from analogue to digital broadcasting, with the final analogue switch-off scheduled for December 31, 2028.

FreeTV provides a diverse mix of programming, including news, sports, movies, music, educational shows, children’s content, and dedicated channels in Yoruba, Hausa, and Igbo. The hybrid model combines satellite (DTH), terrestrial transmission, and a dedicated mobile app, ensuring reach to urban, rural, and underserved communities. Existing televisions work with compatible DVB-T2 or DVB-S2 decoders; many households with free-to-air decoders may need no new equipment. Regional production studios in Lagos, Abuja, Port Harcourt, Enugu, Kano, and Benin are expected to drive local content creation and job opportunities in the creative sector.

Accessing FreeTV is straightforward. Viewers can tune in via compatible satellite dishes and set-top boxes for Direct-to-Home reception or use terrestrial signals where available. The FreeTV mobile app allows smartphone access, broadening options for younger audiences and mobile-first users. Official guidance encourages checking decoder compatibility, downloading the app from freetv.ng, and contacting support at +2347003887277 for assistance. While content is free after setup, initial costs for decoders, dishes, and professional installation may apply for those without compatible equipment.

The FreeTV platform offers significant benefits to the public, including improved picture and sound quality, greater channel variety, and expanded access to information and entertainment without recurring bills—providing relief amid economic pressures. It promotes digital inclusion for rural populations, supports indigenous languages and local content, and is projected to create jobs while stimulating the creative economy and advertising market.
