MYCOTOXICOSES IN POULTRY (4)

Clinical manifestations

The signs of severe fungal infections are not specific. They resemble the signs of many other diseases in Poultry.

Nevertheless, I will outline an inexhaustible list of evidences of MYCOTOXICOSES as seen in Poultry farms:

1. Poor appetite or complete unwillingness to feed

2. Diarrhoea

3. Paralysis

4. Incordinarion

5. Poor weight gain and growth

6. Low egg production

7. Poor hatchability of eggs in breeder farms

8. Recumbency I.e always lying down

The immune system of an infected flock is usually compromised, making them prone to concurrent infections.

Do not underestimate the presence and effect of mycotoxin.
Speak with your veterinarian for correct diagnosis and most importantly put a workable preventive protocol in place.

MYCOTOXICOSES IN POULTRY (3)

PREDISPOSING FACTORS

Certain conditions make it favourable for the establishment and proliferation of fungal diseases.
Aflatoxicosis is the most common of fungal infections among poultry flock.

Your farm may be easily predisposed if the following practices and conditions abound:

1. Adding fishmeal to finished commercial feeds

2. Adding wheat offals to commercial feeds or feeding it wholly

3. Storing your feeds in non or poorly aerated spaces

4. Stockpiling feeds or raw materials on the floor and against the wall

5. Using maize with high moisture content to formulate feeds

6. Consistently patronising toll Millers who have no capacity to analyse raw materials before use

7. Farmers with excessive obsession for cheap prices

8. Hording of raw materials may subject them to fungal growth

9. Allow feeds to cake within feeder surfaces

10. Poor litter hygiene

11. Poorly ventilated farm housing

12. Mixing raw materials on contaminated floors and machine surfaces

13. General situation of poor standard of hygiene

If you must dabble into feed production, go and learn the technicalities involved.

Poultry investment is a capital intensive project.
Carelessness and negligence can ruin everything.

Take nothing for granted.

MYCOTOXICOSIS IN POULTRY (2)

SUSCEPTIBILITY

The severity of diseases caused by fungal toxins varies depending on several factors such as species, breed, age, nutritional status, hygienic standards, and management practices.

Species: Ducks are the most prone.
Turkeys are next in susceptibility while chickens are the least susceptible.

Age: Younger birds come down with more severe disease than older birds.

Dose: Birds that are placed on highly mouldy feeds are likely to show signs of severe mycotoxicosis.

Poor Management Practices: Flocks manifesting concurrent infections may be easily prone to mycotoxicoses.

The degree of severity vary from flock to flock due to variability in a multiple of deleterious conditions.

Maintain strict hygienic conditions, give properly formulated feeds, and focus more on prevention rather than cure.

The effects of Mycotoxins may be difficult to handle.

A stitch in time saves nine.

MYCOTOXICOSES IN POULTRY (1)

This is what is commonly referred to as fungal infections.
All diseases caused by moulds that lead to lethal or harmful toxin production is what is known as MYCOTOXICOSES.

This disease occurs all over the world but spread is seen more in warm and humid climates.

Fungal infections in Poultry flock is usually underestimated, misdiagnosed and taken for granted.

Animals and man do suffer this diseases leading to severe consequences such as poor growth, infertility, low productivity, enlargement and tumours in the liver.

The performance of a flock infected with fungal infections will always be less than expected.
Their immunity is usually compromised, making them prone to other other opportunistic infections.

Speak with your veterinarian on the need to develop a preventive protocol against MYCOTOXICOSES or stay with me on this page to learn more.

"I HAVE BEEN DOING POULTRY FOR YEARS"

I hear this statement almost on a daily basis.

This assertion is what you hear when farmers want to persuade you to see them as flawless authority, as infallible perfectionist.

In reality, this is nothing short of complacency.
Poultry practice can be quite dynamic in the sense that seasons, topography, and climate can alter how we manage farms.

You make this boast and still cannot raise a standard housing for chickens that can stand all weather.

Bragging about years of experience without maintaining strict hygiene is futile.

My people let's condescend to learn.
Let's unlearn to relearn..
Let's stoop low to excel.

Ask questions, and seek guidance.

WRONG PRACTICES AND MYTHS IN TURKEY REARING

1. Raising Turkeys together with broilers in the same space and pen

2. Subjecting Turkeys under the same warmth conditions with other species of birds

3. Feeding Turkeys with broiler rations

4. Mixing commercial and finished Turkey feeds with offals

5. Keeping Turkeys in unhygienic environment under the guise that they are rugged.

6. Feeding Turkeys with all sorts of items with the assumption that they Feed on kitchen waste and remnants.

7. Neglecting to vaccinate Turkeys with the assertion that they are strong.

8. Raising male and female Turkeys in the same space.

9. Keeping Turkeys in congested and overcrowded conditions
