After laying an egg, hens often make a loud, distinctive cackling noise called the "egg song." Scientists believe this may be a form of communication perhaps to distract predators, announce their accomplishment, or help flock members coordinate nesting.

Hens also prefer to lay in the same nest boxes as their flockmates. The presence of eggs even fake ceramic ones encourages other hens to use the same spot.
