I have been married to my husband for almost four years, and there is one thing about our marriage that I have never been able to understand.
My husband has always been a very private man.
Not the kind of private person who simply enjoys his own space.
I mean extremely private.
There are certain parts of his life he refuses to talk about, and for years, I convinced myself that it was simply his personality.
When we first met, I actually liked that about him.
He was calm, respectful and hardworking.
He wasn’t the type of man who spent all his time outside with friends.
He rarely drank, he didn’t chase women, and he was very focused on his business.
When he asked me to marry him, I believed I had found a man who knew exactly what he wanted.
We got married and started our family.
Over the years, he provided everything we needed.
The children were well taken care of.
Our bills were paid.
We lived comfortably.
From the outside, we looked like the perfect family.
But there was one strange thing about my husband.
He never talked about his past.
Whenever I asked him about his childhood, he would change the subject.
Whenever I asked about his family, he would give me very short answers.
I knew his parents.
I knew a few of his relatives.
But there were certain questions I could never get a proper answer to.
At first, I didn’t think much of it.
I told myself everyone had things they didn’t like discussing.
Then one evening, something happened.
My husband received a phone call.
The moment he saw the number, his entire mood changed.
He stood up and walked outside to answer it.
I didn’t hear the conversation.
But when he came back inside, he looked worried.
I asked him what happened.
He simply said,
“Nothing. It’s work.”
I believed him.
Or at least I tried to.
A few weeks later, I noticed that he had started receiving letters from the same person.
Whenever one arrived, he would quickly take it and put it somewhere I couldn’t see.
I didn’t want to invade his privacy, so I kept quiet.
But something inside me kept telling me that there was a story he wasn’t telling me.
Then, one Saturday morning, my husband travelled out of town unexpectedly.
He said he needed to attend an important business meeting.
While he was away, I was looking for an old document in his study when I accidentally opened a drawer he rarely used.
Inside was an old photograph.
I picked it up.
There was my husband.
But he wasn’t alone.
Standing beside him was a little girl.
She looked about five years old.
On the back of the photograph was a date from many years before we met.
And underneath the date were four words that made my heart stop.
“Daddy loves you always.”
I stood there staring at the photograph.
My husband had never told me about a daughter.
Not once.
I immediately started wondering who the little girl was.
Then I noticed something else inside the drawer.
There were several photographs.
The same little girl appeared in almost all of them.
And in the last photograph, she was much older.
She looked like a teenager.
I was still trying to understand what I was seeing when my phone rang.
It was my husband.
I answered.
His voice was unusually quiet.
Then he said something that completely shocked me.
“Please don’t touch anything in that drawer.”
I couldn’t speak.
He continued,
“There is something I’ve been trying to tell you for years.”
And that was when I realized the secret wasn’t just about the little girl.
There was something much bigger behind those photographs.
Something my husband had hidden from me since before we got married.
And I was about to find out why.
To be continued…
