FOUR PASSENGERS WALKED ONTO A FLYDUBAI FLIGHT AS STRANGERS. THEY LANDED AS HEROES.
What began as a routine trip from Dubai to Tel Aviv turned into a terrifying airborne emergency on September 30.
Inside the cockpit of Flydubai Flight FZ1073, Captain Smit Machchhar was seriously injured as the Boeing 737 started descending rapidly.
Even while badly hurt, the captain managed to unlock the cockpit door.
That decision gave everyone outside the cockpit a chance to respond.
And they did.
Among the first to step forward was Yaniv Hayoun, a 50 year old plumber.
After helping restrain the co pilot, Hayoun realized the aircraft itself needed immediate attention. With no pilot properly controlling the jet at that moment, he grabbed the controls and pulled back, helping stop the dangerous descent until someone more qualified could take over.
One surprising detail made the story even more remarkable.
Hayoun said some of what he knew about aircraft emergencies came from watching Air Crash Investigation.
He was not the only passenger who acted.
Tzvika Manes and Asaf Rajuan also entered the cockpit area and helped keep the situation under control.
At the same time, Captain Machchhar needed urgent medical attention.
That is when Dr. S***a Musayev, a dentist traveling home from China, stepped in.
Musayev treated the injured captain, worked to control the bleeding and helped stabilize him while the emergency continued around them.
Then came another crucial development.
Qualified pilots who were traveling as passengers aboard the flight took over the controls and diverted the Boeing 737 to Tabuk, Saudi Arabia, where the aircraft landed safely.
All 174 people aboard survived.
The actions of Hayoun, Manes, Rajuan and Musayev were later recognized by Israeli President Isaac Herzog, who said he would recommend them for the Presidential Award for Civilian Heroism.
But this was not the story of one person saving an airplane.
It was the story of several people doing exactly what was needed at exactly the right moment.
A wounded captain found the strength to open the cockpit.
A plumber helped control the aircraft.
Passengers helped contain the threat.
A dentist became the emergency medic.
And qualified pilots finished the job by bringing everyone safely to the ground.
None of them boarded Flight FZ1073 expecting to become part of an aviation survival story.
But when the emergency came, they acted.
Sometimes the most important person on an airplane is not the one you expect.
