Preparing for the Arrival of Broiler DOC

The preparation of the brooding house should begin before the chicks arrive. The purpose is to create a clean, warm, safe and comfortable environment where the chicks can immediately access feed and water.

Clean and disinfect the brooder

* Remove old litter, dust, feathers and manure.
* Wash equipment such as feeders and drinkers.
* Disinfect the house and equipment appropriately.
* Allow the house to dry properly.

DON’T PUT YOUR BIRDS INTO THE BROODER IMMEDIATELY YOU GET THEM, SPRINKLE THEM COOL WATER AND ALLOW THEM REST A BIT BEFORE PUTTING THEM IN.

< Prepare the litter
Use clean, dry litter such as wood shavings. The litter should not be wet or mouldy because wet litter encourages bacterial growth and can contribute to foot problems and poor air quality.

< Prepare the heat source
Broiler chicks cannot regulate their body temperature effectively when they are very young. Therefore, adequate heat is essential during brooding.
The brooder should be preheated before the chicks arrive, rather than waiting until they arrive.

< Prepare feed and water
Have clean drinking water and appropriate broiler starter feed ready before the chicks arrive.

< Check ventilation
The brooder needs fresh air, but avoid direct drafts blowing onto the chicks.
